Mario has a long history of spinning off into new genres. Golf, racing, baseball, parties, RPGs, soccer, Tetris, tennis, fighting, volleyball, even those weird educational things! Currently relevant, Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle combines both franchises into a turn-based tactics game. This impressive repertoire may leave you wondering "What hasn't this man done?" I'm afraid that's the question I intend to pose to you; you must bring your newest and freshest game ideas to the Marioverse! Here's the rundown: - Create sprites for a hypothetical new game distinctly (and mechanically) different from any existing Mario game: a stealth game, a first-person shooter, a dungeon crawler, a match-3 puzzler, a wrestling competition, a dating sim, whatever.
- You are not strictly limited to new ideas. You can make a platformer as long as it's not just a platformer, just as you could make a turn-based tactical game if you were to make it more about large-scale warfare than shooting Rabbids from behind cover.
- There is no limit to how much you can make. You can just do character animations, tiles, or even a full mockup if you're feeling up to it. However, however much you do, the main concept of the game must be clear from the sprites themselves; don't make a brick block and say it's part of a party-based puzzle action metroidvania.
- Don't be discouraged if you're having trouble coming up with an idea! We've got a great Concept Corner you can delve through for inspiration, or you could do a look through Steam. There're a lot of game ideas out there, I'm sure you can find one that grabs your interest.
And that should be about it! I believe you have until Tuesday, August 22nd to submit your... submissions. Let's get the creative juices flowing and see if we can generate some awesome concepts!
