Hey ho Vertette back from the dead to make people upset like always, let's go.
The art style is really all over the place. I get that it's a whole bunch of people helping out but you should at least have a few rules set in-stone, like how the shading or outlines work. One level element is lit from the left and another level element right next to it from the right, foregrounds using black outlines while entities use coloured outlines, it looks sloppy.
Thanks for the comments, there are a few things here I can explain:
- I think the bush is what's throwing that screenshot off, it was a very early proof of concept for modularity (i.e. a few tiles which can be used to create a bunch of different bushes). It's lit from the left because that's how the bush in the original SMW is lit, but I immediately realized it didn't match with anything
- The koopas in that screenshot are also out of date, we've since made them more in-style with Mario (including a darker outline)
- We do have rules for shading and outlines, basically we use selective outlines that are mostly black, but colored when we need the line to appear not-so-bold. But keep in mind that you're looking at a very early screenshot, at that point in time we were still trying to figure out how the style should go
