Probably should get back to the topic at hand. As amusing as that image is, this is a Development Showcase thread and we shouldn't derail it further or take the spotlight off of the game this thread is about.

We decided to change the art style a bit. Not that there was anything wrong with Mit's Big Five-Oh style, but I think a more detailed art style would fit this kind of game a bit more. I was also kinda getting bored of the old style (i know, that's kinda selfish lol)

I really love the more detailed style a lot! Whether you feel like this decision is selfish or not, I feel like this is a great change! Hopefully the details don't complicate animation too much, though!

REEEEEEE

I already said it over a month ago, it's not the final sprite. Stop trying to fix something that's already fixed a month ago lol
though i gotta admit that spritey's edit is hot <3

Anyways, here's a better sprite:

EDIT: I forgot to mention that Neweegee is the one who made the Mario sprites, whoops!

Wow that's really nice, not sure about the face (the mustache is almost waluigi-esque) but the running animation is flawless

Ah this looks really good! I love the little details like the brick particles interacting with the lava!

Very good job on the new sprites, Neweegee! This project's future is really looking bright. If there's any way I can help out, I will.

If you'd like, I can make some Flashback styled tilesets, or character sprites. I think Yoshi could use a fresh sprite. Not that it doesn't look good already, but I think it could look a lot better. Unless Neweegee made a new one that I am unaware of.

I mean if the sprites I make aren't good enough, then oh well. You do not have to use the ones I put out if you don't want to. Just saying that I won't get salty if you don't use mine.

What sprites are you looking for?

Thanks but I told you this 3 times already, we are doing just fine and don't really need any help. I dunno how you're planning to help anyways, considering you're banned from the Discord server for being too aggressive.

Let's not start a war here, alright? This is your thread.

And alright. I'm here if you need any help in the future though.

Nice new sprites! Though, I think the background surface and hills could be a bit darker to fit with the other tile sprites in the foreground.

Spoiler:

I still prefer the older trees. They look a little under detailed compared to the rest of the new graphics, but they are waaay more shapely. The new trees don't really look like trees at all, just awkward ovals with leaves.

Since Mors kinda forgot to post this here:

The SAGE 2017 engine test is now downloadable. Get it here!

The game is a bit buggy currently, and hopefully it'll be updated during SAGE to fix some of the more glaring issues.

Super Mario Flashback Engine Test but every time Mario dies the music overlaps (This is an actual bug).

For me, this only happens when I fall into a pit.

I tried out the demo on NCFC 2017, Mors, and I think it's pretty good! Here's a list of my thoughts on it:

  • The graphics look quite lovely. Each sprite (well, non-placeholder sprite, that is) looks very well-detailed and the animations are quite fluid; they're actually kinda fun to look at. :) My only graphical complaint is about some of the effects (such as the trail left behind when ground-pounding), as they appear to be always smooth and 1x, while all the other graphics are pixelated, making them sort of clash.
  • I like the remix. It sounds pretty great, can't think of what else to say about it.
  • I find stomping on the enemies to be a bit too difficult, so difficult that after I got beaten a few times, I decided to not bother stomping on them, which seems to end up making the game easier. I usually get hit instead of the enemies. One way to fix it might be to widen the enemies' hitboxes. It could also help if Mario's traction was better (especially on the air).
  • Either Mario seems too fast when running or the Koopa shells appear to be too slow, as the player can actually run into them when running to their direction and get hit as a result, which doesn't seem really fair.
  • When it comes to glitches, I once hit a Piranha Plant with a fireball and its coin ended up inside its pipe, being impossible to collect. I ground pounded a Goomba stack and I somehow took damage from the Goomba on the bottom. I'd like to point out that whenever I jump soon after landing with a ground pound, the trail appears for a bit, which I don't think is supposed to happen. One time, when I lost all of my health, the music was still playing, even when the level started, as another music track starts and therefore the music tracks overlap each other.

Overall, I think it's just great. I'm sure the final result will be fantastic, with its cool concept, especially if the problems I had listed got fixed.
