Hey, I just noticed that there's a metric ton of Donkey Kong references in the city level.

... Is it meant to be the city the original Donkey Kong took place in? 'CAUSE THAT'S AWESOME AS HELL YO

come to think of it, would that mean it was the same place as the big city world in donkey kong 94? that would be sick, either way

Why does Mario's hat have sentience.

Well, we saw in a scene that Bowser smashes Mario's hat. At first I thought that was a late game scene and the hat was the living one, but now I'm thinking that may be right at the beginning, and Bowser is crushing Mario's normal hat, after which Mario gets the living one (most likely from Crazy Caps, a store that seems to be in every level).

Also, it's worth mentioning that the city is called "New Donk City", as shown on a sign in the background.

You guys have no idea of how much I've already fantasized about a sandbox Mario game taking place in a big city. This is like a dream come true. I have never been this hyped for a Mario game in my life.

Another thing worth mentioning, it's odd that the ship you use to get around stays at the start of the level, implying you can leave with it at any time. This makes me think that you'll be able to get multiple stars (or whatever it is you are looking for) per visit to a level, much like Banjo Kazooie.

Regardless of how well it turns out or how linear it ends up being, I'm satisfied with the amount of creative effort that went into this game. The new locales, characters and concept overall look like a breath of fresh air! My only complaint would be how the forest/factory area looks. It looks really dark and dreary with the characters barely fitting in.

Eh, looks okay I guess.

JUST KIDDING THIS GAME LOOKS AMAZING OH MY GOD IVE ALWAYS WANTED AN OPEN WORLD PLATFORMER WITH A SETTING LIKE THAT AND ITS MARIO AND I MAY GET IT AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Tho Mario looks pretty weird when he's with those realistic humans. It kinda reminds me of Sonic 06, but much less terrible.

Let's talk about these guys.

I don't know why, but I love their designs. Who are they, though? Do they work for Bowser? Are they Koopaling stand-ins? Are they his wedding planners? Were those rumors about the Mario x Rabbids RPG crossover based on this? How long before people start drawing lewd art of the girl one?

I just noticed one of the Hammer Bros. is a cook throwing pans around

I still have no idea what is the plot of this game.

It feels like the premise of this game is to send Mario on all places outside the Mushroom Kingdom. It feels like they try to give each environment a unique artstyle, with the city and lowpoly food world being polar opposites, in order to make Mario always feel sort of out of place. It gives a weird sense of a foreign feel. Nowhere near like that of 06, just an interesting sense of feeling you don't belong, because you are from somewhere else entirely.

It feels like Mario isn't just going to new locations, but also reimagined old ones. For instance, the city quite clearly is the city from the original Donkey Kong game, so I wouldn't be surprised if the desert happened to be Sarasaland - it gives me a few certain Sarasa vibes, while still feeling entirely new.

I have a feeling Mario will be able to equip all sorts of different hats, given there's a hat store, and I assume each hat comes with different abilities. I hope you can buy certain hats unique to the locale you are in - for instance being able to obtain a chef hat in the food world and a construction helment in the city or factory world. A construction helment could give you an effect similar to that of a buzzy beetle shell in SMM.

The story also seems to be pretty interesting so far. I really like that pimp Bowser and his mafia gang.

It's already happened. Trust me, I checked just for the sake of confirming this.

This game looks amazing, and I'll definitely get it and a Switch. I have high hopes for this.

I'm pretty excited for this. Looks dope, mate.

Some predictions and musings I posted in Club Saturn EX:
Quote:
(1) As I've said before, my prediction is that the game deals with parallel worlds. I don't know if they said so or if I just made it up, but I'm convinced
(2) Bowser is trying to force Peach into a shotgun wedding. It's the biggest shindig in the decade and everybody in the multiverse is invited... well, except for Mario.
(3) Bowser taunts Mario and stomps on his famous red cap. He then disappears into another universe.
(4) Maybe Mario is dragged with him? Idk
(5) Basically, though, he meets Sapient Cap Guy. Given that it's shaped like a hat, I think it might be safe to assume the ship belongs to him.
(6) I'm guessing it'll have some kind of dimension jumping power.
(7) Also, I have no idea why, but I have a slight inkling that the bunnies are AU koopalings. Doubt it, though.
(8) They just kinda look alike to me
(9) But yeah, I think it's safe to assume hats are a major factor, yeah
(10) It was compared to 64 and Sunshine, so I'm guessing it'll follow that sort of collectathon formula. I have a suspicion it won't be properly open world ala Breath of the Wild, but I nonetheless think that the levels will be much more expansive than we're used to.
(11) Another argument in favor [of the alternate universes] is that it's a step up from Galaxy in scope
(12) But yeah, to accommodate the much larger levels, I'm guessing that each level will have more stars on average, as well.
(13) Like, if Sunshine's standard was 8, maybe 16?
(14) And as noted, it seems very likely that hat-based moves will be the focus. For that reason, I heavily suspect that traditional powerups (such as the fire flower) likely won't make an appearance.
(15) Either that, or the hats will do different things depending on which you have.
(16) And lastly, the trailer seems to show a much more elaborated parkour system, such as jumping on a taxi and swinging from a lamp post.
(17) I am in love with this decision
(18) The parkour in 3D Mario is always crazy fun to me
(19) Also, a completely nearly baseless prediction (excluding their love of nostalgia), but I predict there will be at least one throwback area, ala Throwback Galaxy.
(20) I think that's all I got, so let's wait and see how accurate I was

Seeing how Wrecking Crew got turned into a realistic looking environment in Smash Bros., I don't see this as being very unlikely.

Nah, they're too different. Sarasaland's worlds all have clear inspirations (Birabuto is Egyptian, Muda is the lost continent of Mu, Easton is Easter island, Chai is Oriental), while this desert is pretty clearly based on Dia de los Muertos.

Ohhhhh man I can't stop drooling all over this. It's exactly what I've wanted out of a 3D Mario game for all these years.

It better not disappoint, but I doubt that's even a possibility!

Mario climbing on the streetlights and what not looks so neat.

EDIT- Oh wow, that screaming goomba.
Spoiler:

EDIT2- Now that I think about it, the level looks a bit small when we see it from high up, but Mario came out of the sewers at the start of the trailer, so I'm wondering if theres actually and underground segment.

This is literally one of two things (aside from MK8DX) that interested me in the Switch presentation. Open-world 3D Mario platformer? Count. Me. In. I'll finally have something to sate my need for another real 3D Mario since Galaxy 2! ...they better un-nerf the long jump sometime...

It looks so amazing aaaaaaaa and why is it a Holiday exclusive aaaaaaaaa AND I NEED IT NOW AAAAAAAA

You mean since Super Mario Sunshine.

You mean since 3D World. All "real" 3D Marios have a Z-axis, long jumps, side flips, backflips, and lots of shiny objects to collect.

But that's just my opinion.
