Has anyone here gotten tired of using the regular Mario smilies over and over? You know, those animated emoticons that are Mario's head? What I think we could do is have a "Custom" button that allows people to use custom emoji in their posts. Let's say I wanted to use an emoji that wasn't listed in the Smilies section, we could add a Custom box under the Smilies box that allows me to upload my own gif or image that isn't listed in the Smilies box. Not to mention we can add multiple emojis into posts, but add a limit if we need to so that it won't get out of control.

What do you guys think? Should we add custom emojis?

That sounds like a pretty good idea honestly, but it's all up to the higher-ups.

smilies are going to be replaced with standard emoji styled after mario iirc, likely alongside extra smiley packs based off of different things and characters. that being said, custom emoji just like custom post backgrounds means that the added freedom could get in the way of how the forum looks overall. it's better to provide options and let users make things out of that than to remove the "limitation" entirely.

Eh, good point. It COULD get very out of hand if the limitations on this were gone.

I feel like adding custom smilies might complicate the ui on the post screen.

If you want to use an emoji that's not in the current set, you can always link to it using IMG tags. Image

In the long run, it would be a lot easier to expand the current set (basically, what Mit said) than to implement a system where users can upload their own emoji.

What I was referring to was using emojis without having to use the IMG tag. It'd be quicker and easier than having to find the file link yourself.

i kinda have to agree with kirb here. using a website and the img tag is complicated for people who don't know about imgur and whatnot.

Or, what I do is upload the image on a Discord channel, click Open Original, then copy the website address and paste it into the Img tag. But yeah, that's the whole point.

having auto-bbcode/embedding if image links are posted sounds like a good idea regardless of if it's used for emotes or otherwise.

I don't agree with this because then that messes with the ability to post nsfw content as a link with a warning.

I quite like the idea of being able to upload custom smilies. That's already a mod you can get for software like this:

https://aliensoup.com/index.php?threads ... ies.57240/

https://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=115993

Though I haven't found a phpBB version yet.

I think we'd be fine with just normal emojis, but this forum doesn't seem to support them. Gives an "incorrect string value" SQL error whenever you try to insert one in your post (for example)

Can we please have a whole SVG set that looks like this

The current smilies are aesthetically pleasing and everything, but they're reeeally tiny (and honestly not as strong as the old ones) which means I literally have to squint to see what most of them are

Also :) has never looked like a smile, even the old version. It just looks like Mario not making any face

I'm definitely willing to help with smilies in that style, do we have a vector version to start with?

the filesize(s) are probably wonky because i haven't taken out sketch stuff yet that's not visible, but here's basically everything i have done
