Hello, people from MFGG. I'm sorry about that Weegee virus outbreak that we had in the General Chat forum this afternoon. I'm cured now. I'm somewhere in the middle, leaning more toward "give it a shot".

a few people were actually discussing this elsewhere earlier, and the general consensus is that one month might not be enough. the worry is that within one month, or some other short period of time like with PPP revivals in the past, it makes people want to get in as many posts as possible. MFGG's current userbase is undeniably younger than it was in the past, and not everyone is mature enough to handle a PPP. much like with how past revivals went i foresee many, many meme threads that may be funny to some, are entirely groanworthy for others. the PPP works best when it's, effectively, a GC just with less rules. it's called the Pointless Post Palace however threads created still need to have some kind of content or purpose lest it just become filler junk. having an entire forum dedicated to this devalues MFGG and the average post from MFGG. the same, however, can be said for forum games, which not everyone is 100% behind. personally, if the PPP returned, i would either want it to merge with the GC, replace forum games, or simply have a different name. many MFGGers have different sense of humor which lead to their own fun as well as conflicts, and i feel a PPP would accentuate this. i'm with hyliandev in the idea that "the lounge" might be the best name to use, though its connotations with oldbies might not go over well. if i had to get right down to it, moderation would potentially need to be more diverse and cover more fields of MFGG's areas of interest. currently site staff does have a decent amount of personality diversity to it, but MFGG, like all communities, inevitably has cliques and some get more representation than others. the more ground covered means better understanding and more experienced conclusions made. the PPP can't be watched over by mostly one type of personality, lest the inevitable dominance of one type of sense of humor in favor of others. ironically just plunking the PPP into current MFGG is nowhere near as easy as it may initially seem due to how things are currently structured.

Well, the idea of discussing this here is mainly about how much junk would the forum receive be if we gave it a chance. If what you're afraid of is that it gets too many crappy topics and threads, we could discuss some rules to be added so that the forum becomes less of a LOL RANDOM f**kposting hell.

it's definitely not about rules in the PPP, it's about self control.

1 month is a greater trial period than a week or day like previous "event" PPP's have been which is why that was my suggestion, but perhaps a quarter year would be better. There'd have to be an official review at the end though, talking about warns and bans, posts and the like. The full works! You'd possibly also need a few dedicated PPP mods, but the current set of admins and mods seem fairly on the ball. At the same time, some discussion needs to be had as to whether or not it'd be worth keeping Forum Games, because historically these games took place within the PPP. I wouldn't merge the PPP with the General Chat as both have their place, almost every forum I've been to have separate General Discussion and Off-Topic areas. Personally I don't care about the name, I like the PPP for historical reasons but it really makes no difference whatsoever. Personally I'm not for or against it, but as a way of increasing activity and keeping the board's previously light hearted nature intact without coming off too serious, I'd be willing to give it a trial. There's no way of knowing what'll happen unless you give things a shot.

PPP was not for sheepposting. I'm saying this because I know that it's going to turn into a sheepposting forum really quickly. And while I actually like sheepposting, that would be the last thing I wanna see on MFGG simply because I don't think this community is capable of making good sheepposts. I mean look at the last 2 sheepposting topics we have in GC. I voted Nay, but I'd be okay with it if it just replaced Forum Games.

If the PPP were to come back, I would say a name change would definitely be in order. I also believe that some kind of rule set would need to be in place to ensure that at least [i]some[/i] substance is there.

MFGG can't even make a quality forum game section. I don't think we can handle a PPP.

I actually find it pretty interesting how some voted for the option "I'm against doing this", while still saying we should give it a shot. What's up with that? Reactions to this idea seem to be mixed, making it dubious to know what to do.

I'd actually be OK with trying an off-topic board if our members were more enthusiastic about the idea. I wouldn't want to call it the PPP or the Lounge, though. I don't want to encourage utterly pointless posts, so the Pointless Post Palace is not an ideal name, but I'm also not a fan of calling it the Lounge. The Lounge was almost universally regarded as a failure when it was opened in 2010, and it's best if the name doesn't carry baggage. Most of the posts in a PPP board are humorous in nature. And therein lies the challenge: Everyone's taste in humor is a little different. Are memes brilliant or awful? Is [url=https://phpbb.mfgg.net/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=19654]a topic like this one[/url] the pinnacle of wit or pointless spam? That depends on whom you ask. Not every topic has to appeal to every user for an off-topic board to be a success, but I do think that getting people to agree on humor they enjoy is especially challenging in today's online environment, where even the most innocuous jokes can become a minefield pretty quickly. The average age of MFGG users (at least on the forums) has steadily risen over the years, and it has actually increased more sharply in 2017. The standard deviation of user ages is somewhat higher during the current iteration of the forums than during the IPB era, which suggests a higher amount of variation in user ages, although the standard deviation hasn't really fluctuated much during the phpBB era. Of course, the correlation between age (whether user age or account age) and emotional maturity is not always that strong! I feel like the Karnov topic is probably closer to "genius" on the spectrum than "trash". This is probably also the consensus. But Karnov is also not representative of every topic that everybody would want to post in the PPP. I admit that the biggest struggle I have with the idea of a PPP is, "what would go there?"

i think getting people to agree on humor is a pointless endeavor at this point, not only because of the drama it's caused in off-topic MFGG related settings like chatrooms, but also because i'd rather have newbies form their own in-jokes and community than thrust what baggage us oldbies have onto them. it shouldn't ultimately be about "is this spam" or not, it should be "do i, personally, find this funny" and leaving it at that. because that's where most of my personal worry comes from- the potential hypocrisy that can come from regarding a joke one dislikes as spam, and shutting it down for that very reason, even though not everyone agrees. i think the idea of a joke being "spam" should be disregarded entirely in the context of a PPP especially. in a way, i wanna go back on what i said and say a PPP could work and let people do what they want with it, purely so they can do what they want with it and make up their own new things. at the same time, i still think that this kind of thing would diminish the value of other posts retroactively, much like forum games. i would like to, rather than point them in one direction or another in terms of "what is funny", have them think a bit harder about what they're doing and have an actual punchline and goal with these jokes. the karnov thread had a structure and theme in mind, and i think it worked out pretty well. also worth noting is that, with the new site revisions geared towards accessibility, the userbase SHOULD be younger as it becomes easier to use. they won't dominate, as they never really have, but they'll have more of a presence than they do now.
