Hello guys, some of you may recognize me from the mainsite. I was thinking about MFGG having an official Discord server. Kind-of like how VG-Resource has one. By official I mean it's actually run by the admins/mods on the mainsite and here on the forums. Not by some fan. It would be easier to chat with people since it's live. Also you can share WIPs and other things much faster. What do you all think?

We've found that individual members are better at running discord channels than the official staff. Hotel Delfino is a wonderful discord group that I recommend using. Also, I'm moving this to the Suggestions forum.

I'm pretty sure an official MFGG Discord that's being moderated by the MFGG Staff [size=150][b]only[/b][/size] can work, but both the staff and rest of the members are too scared to try this since MFGG has a very bad history with chats and we are already doing somewhat okay with these unofficial chats. The last attempt of an official MFGG chat ending up being pretty bad also doesn't help.

everyone has different ideas of the best way to run a chat, and history shows that not having a designated official one usually has the least amount of friction in regards to in-community drama. like syax posted, hotel delfino is the closest we may get for now, as its a joint effort between the two original chats (club saturn and jimmy t) and so far has been going pretty well.

Hm...looks like it's not happening. The reasons are although valid. I wonder why previous attempts at an official MFGG chat failed.

I think the official chats usually get off to a good start, but then interest wanes and they either die out or morph into something else.

We've had a bunch of unofficial Skype groups since then, although in the past year we've been shifting toward Discord as the most popular chat channel. Fast-moving Internet chat groups are difficult to moderate effectively, and there are widely differing opinions about how best to run such a group. For that reason, unofficial chat groups tend to merge, split, or fade away in an endless cycle of birth, death, and rebirth.

We've had unofficial chat groups that used IRC, Skype, and Discord. The MFGG IRC was the only one with an official status, but that was many years ago.

Another reason why this might be a problem is that people may stop using the forums. If everyone finds it easier to chat in the Discord or other chat room, this place could die out. Something like this actually happened to a sprite animation group called "The Spritas".

Yeah, Discord activity is already consuming forum activity as is.
