Marioji™, Hundreds Of Smilies At Your Fingertips

Marioji™ is the name tentatively given to the newest set of smilies that were integrated i think a year ago by now. in MFGG3, they would be fully redrawn in SVG format for ease of use in many more situations, reactions being a very big chunk of that.

this is the current full set of Marioji™, with plenty of unused smilies and alternates that would be candidates for would-be purchasable smiley sets on MFGG3.

the big question is- what types of Marioji™ would you like to see in the future, and how should the Marioji™ look when drawn in SVG format? my previous attempt at a drawn Marioji™ was this-

though i'm not sure it'll work at the necessary sizes.

any examples and suggestions are welcome.

I do not like that Mario face.

If the smilies were going to be redrawn, I'd like to see something easily readable at any size without deviating too much from how they already look.

i disagree that the mario prototype face is dislikable, it's a Good Art and very well made

what i will agree with is that it doesn't really resemble mario a whole lot at a distance where it will most likely be utilized, maybe giving him more traditional mario-esque features would remedy this? tbh it reminds me a lot of the saturday supercade donkey kong mario design, lmao

I never said it was bad, I just don't think it's right for the forum. It feels like someone's interpretive fanart rather than a smiley. Keep it simple, keep it readable and keep it recognisable at a glance. The emotion on the smiley is more important than changing the art style.

you could see how i could misinterpret something as vague as "i do not like that mario face" which doesn't actually say anything opinion-wise other than expressing you dislike it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

anyways that's still my point of the day, i do think the art style matters a little bit at least, even if you disagree

my intention wasn't for it to be "the basis for all future smilies", i even said it doesn't work too well from a distance. i'm encouraging others to throw their hats into the ring and try their own designs and see how far that goes, since i believe that's how we'll get the best results

in that case, yeah i'd like to see some other mario face designs, actually if someone could do one that's derivative of the old mario art that could work, that could get really expressive - have you ever combed through the smb3 artwork, like the ones where mario's in the various worlds? it would be really fitting

I've filled a small sketch page with Marioji™ drafts, trying to come up with something closer to "what we have now". I think Mit's got the right idea with the sideways hat. Basically, what I settled with was re-emphasizing the nose/mustache and removing the eye whites. Pardon the handwriting.

I'd refrain from anything too stylized. Something closer to the official renders with flat shading to give it that modern vector feel would work, I guess.

a quick and rough design that follows the official style as much as it's needed. the issue though is that again these would probably be difficult to read at small sizes.

Excellent. Even as rough sketches they're good, though I feel like linework would need to be pretty bold especially around the eyes and mouth to convey emotions properly at small sizes.

Those look better. I could envision the eyebrows around the black M emblem being an issue at smaller resolutions, though. This is most noticeable in the second from the left, maybe bring them down a bit?

Modern maybe, but probably not that readable, I'd have to see examples. There would need to be more harsh shading, because Mario's eyes and skin colour are both very light and a quick glance isn't enough to tell what's going on.

The linework is too thin on the one with lines to make it worthwhile. Try one with thicker lines.
