Mario has never had a backstory beyond "hey he's a plumber" and the games haven't suffered for it.

virtually every division of nintendo besides NoJ made it a pretty big point in most if not all of the promotional cartoons, comics, etc in the series' youth and nintendo going out of their way to bury it when it means a lot to a lot of people is going to naturally make people pretty upset when to them the stuff they grew up with "didnt matter"

Cartoons, comics and so on aren't canon and never were. Just like there's never been a mention of Brooklyn in the games. Just like we don't see Rotor or Antoine and other random characters from the Archie Sonic comics in the main Sonic games. They're extra bits of fun but they're basically an unrelated universe to the games themselves. Does changing a line of text on a website mean that future comics and cartoons won't use plumbing as a thing in Mario games? Who knows, but it won't affect the games themselves, for better or worse.

This doesn't mean I wouldn't love if Nintendo took the whole plumbing thing more seriously too, would be great to see him using a plunger in an RPG game instead of just the hammer, or more little nods like that, but Nintendo just doesn't work that way.

I just really hope he isn't a superhero in the mushroom kingdom. He's cool as a fat athletic (strange?) Italian older dude. It would hurt the franchise and fans if he was a complete character in my opinion. I don't want him to change but adding backstory does not necessarily mean too much change.

To be fair, "behind the scenes" generally implies "not seen".

They'd probably prefer it that way.

That sounds like a cute idea, I'd enjoy that

Doesn't the whole pipe travel thing kind of link back to him being a plumber? This seems like a pointless change, as him being a plumber didn't really do anything but make the pipe travel make a little more sense. I think I'd rather them incorporate more of Mario's plumbing career into the games than just take it away completely. Not that I wan't a game all about Mario's plumbing adventures, but having some of the games open with Mario fixing a toilet or coming back from work could at least add a little bit of something to him. Oh well.

I think I saw somewhere that Isle Delphino is on the map for Odyssey, which could mean it has the potential to show up again. Or it could just be a little nod to Sunshine but I hope we get to go there again.

What is funny is that the shellcreeper trophy from brawl says that the bros were no longer plumbers. Long before this.
