Since it doesn't change his appearance or the gameplay, it's not much

The 1990s in the cartoon. Though it's always sort of been believed it in the game even if not mentioned.

Has Mario ever been officially a plumber outside of the cartoon, actually? I'm pretty sure the games have portayed him as the princess' official bodyguard or something since Super Mario Bros. 3.

Mario does some actual plumbing in at least one official Mario game. His role as a plumber was emphasized a lot more in third-party media of the 80's and 90's, although Lady Lima's dialogue strongly suggests that the Mario Bros. are famous for their plumbing skill:

Lady Lima from Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga wrote:
If you two are indeed the true Mario Bros., you must prove it by repairing the castle's plumbing! If you are able to completely fix it, then you may meet Queen Bean! Now then, show me the work ethic of the superstar Mario Bros.!

tbh i am genuinely miffed that they took away what was basically the one last strand of tangible backstory that the mario bros had and i dont understand why they're so anal about making sure that mario and luigi have no quirks or bumps to their characters that help define who they are beyond their personalities

the american canon was pretty stupid but for most kids it became a big part of what they saw mario as, in a lot of ways it helped the games rather than hindered them because the fun side story stuff never got in the way (probably because the main titles have no stories ever). its the same thing with sonic and the archie comics, albeit to a lesser extent, since as it already was sonic had some groundwork story and contextualization for a lot of the early stuff which also helped greatly

i don't like seeing mario and luigi being "nothing" characters, it just means that the stupid hand over fist "GAMEPLAY FIRST" rule is being put in full force without any thought being put into the things around it. like yea gameplay is the most important thing but everything else enhances the gameplay, including silly stuff like this believe it or not, it's there for the people who enjoy it, and if you dont then you should be able to ignore it

i know that surprisingly nobody here really cares about Mario Lore but i wish people actually cared about it because if done well it could make the franchise that much more involved and fun, even if all the Lore stuff is really silly

Well, that's certainly sad :( .

But as long as he and Luigi keep wearing their awesome plumber outfits, I'll be fine.

Does this mean the SMBSS is no longer canon?

Childhood ruined!...Thanks Nintendo of 2009 onwards! :)

On a second note: I like that Mario is absurd. That it doesn't make sense. It gives character to the series. I mean it's not official that Mario is from Brooklyn is it? The Mario Movie tried to make sense of things. Which I would really hate for the series of games.

However, I find the whole Mario Movie on its own rather great and good as long it doesn't interfere with the established games. Which it doesn't cause it's a different universe. However, this is messing with the lore.

Don't mess with the lore Nintendo!! Rule of creativity: work with what you have.

I actually kinda do.

Like, Mario and Luigi are brothers. That's canon and it's not hurting the games in the slightest that we know this. Mario doesn't have to have this huge sweeping lore with multiple plotlines at any given time, but I think established things remaining established is usually fine.

So hey, Nintendo, don't worry mates, it's alright for Isle Delfino to still exist after Sunshine! Beanbean can still be a place, too! Wario and Waluigi can be brothers or cousins or whatever! It's fine, the games will be fine.

They didn't take it away, they only clarified that while Mario used to be a plumber before going to the mushroom kingdom, he is not currently one anymore. I really wish they would go a step further and actually flesh him out to make him a real character, though.

he could easily still be one while having the levels revolve more around piping and plumbing thematically, which was debatably the case in some of the earlier games.

like now the mushroom kingdom's gone full nonsense fantasy, if mario's worlds were more like fantastical reality that played off of the "plumbing" thing it'd probably be way cooler and way more interesting. the plumbing bit in superstar saga is already kinda like this, and it ties the platforming abilities into the plumbing gimmick in a fun way.

Oh, that would be much cooler and unique. I want to see Nintendo do this, now.

Yeah I also got furious when Jumpman stopped being a carpenter and became a plumber. I also got furious when he changed his name to Mario.

Why does Nintendo keep trying to screw with their characters like this?

I read some articles about this where real plumbers actually spoke about this, many of whom enjoyed Mario because he was a positive and cheery portrayal of a plumber instead of the typical depiction as a surly, ugly buttcrack-flashing slob.

This kinda leaves a bad taste in my mouth (as is Nintendo trying to basically eliminate Link's classic green tunic/hat outfit as his official appearance with Zelda: BotW).

This Mario decision isn't a long time coming, either - Mario and Luigi actually did do some plumbing at the beginning of Super Mario 3D World, so it's kinda sudden for them to pull this.

I basically agree with everything Mit has said here.

yeah it's definitely one of the big appeals for Mario- he's not some chosen one or destined to be a hero, he's just a guy with a regular career doing his thing who just happens to be at the right place and right time to save the day. Really good backstory that makes him a lot more relatable than a lot of other heroes. It honestly feels like Nintendo juts doesn't understand the appeal of Mario

I heard Mario is no longer a doctor either.

Don't know how I'll cope with this news.

Or maybe it won't make a difference because Nintendo never fleshed out Mario's story in the first place. It'd have been great if they had a cool backstory involving plumbing and so on that they could've used to accentuate the games through the years, but they haven't in 30+ years outside of a few small nods or mentions. Doesn't mean we won't stop seeing pipes in Mario games and things like that, but I won't pretend it'll matter in the slightest. Mario has never had a backstory beyond "hey he's a plumber" and the games haven't suffered for it.
