Does anyone here like mods? My favorite is CTGP-R (Custom Tracks Grand Prix Revolution) for Mario kart wii. It brings back online functionality, adds 216 additional tracks, and adds a new mode called countdown mode. Another fun mod is Newer Super Mario Bros. wii, a mod for New Super Mario Bros Wii. It has custom levels, music, maps, minigames and powerups. I really recommend these mods. What are your favorite?

I've been modding Minecraft for the last 4 years. Maybe just a tad?

Minecraft and Skyrim are the only games where I've really immersed myself in mods.

For me, Fallout 3 was almost unplayable without mods. Same with Oblivion. I like to mod games wherever it'll enhance the game such as improving things like foliage and other graphical effects, but I try keep things fairly vanilla in most cases.

I find games like Minecraft and Fallout unbearably boring without mods. And there are some games, like Dark Souls (the first one) which are literally actually unplayable and nonfunctional unless you install mods. So yeah, I'm good with them.

That being said, Bethesda can bugger off with the paid mods baloney.

I've been doing Super Smash Bros. Brawl mods for the past two years, it's a lot of fun since I can actually use them on the Wii and I can share them with friends.

One of my favorite hacks is Project M, a major Brawl mod that retools the gameplay to be similar to Melee's and reworks character movesets. I just cannot stand the sluggish gameplay of vanilla Brawl.

I've actually tried to make my own Mario Kart Wii race track, but I ran into problems with the collision data

How tough is it to mod? Like compared to a novice gamemaker user?

Well, it depends on the game. Super Mario Kart: If you have a ROM, there's a program that feels like an image editor.
Mario Kart Wii: You need lots of software, make a 3d model, turn it into a bress file, and a collision model (KCL), and a KMP, map model and other things, If you have riivolution, you can play it on an actual wii(For more information, go to wiki.tockdom.com for the tutorial
New Super Mario Bros. Wii: There's a program similar to Mario maker, but more complicated.

Mods generally don't require coding knowledge

Well uh... not exactly true
If a game has a lot of editors and other modding tools built by others to help make modding the game much easier(Lunar Magic, BrawlBox, etc), then yeah, you'll be able to do a lot of things easily.

But if you want to do something tools aren't able exactly to modify(or worse, a game with no tools at all!), you're gonna have to get your hands dirty and do some serious coding and research(usually with adding new objects and modifying core game mechanics). The difficulty of that ranges dramatically with each game, how much you wanna change, and how much(if any) research has already been done on the game's programming.

Sometimes it's worth and and really cool mods are created(Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii) other times you're better off using a game making tool(a Castlevania Symphony of The Night mod became a Unity project)

Nice!! Had no idea. I could make a stage or two in Mario Kart if it's that simple, seems fun

What you need to know about modding really depends on the game, the tools available, and what you're doing. Coding knowledge is required in some cases. Making a custom map can be as easy as getting a tile editor, or as hard as having to create a custom model and texture for the world.

Custom, fanmade tools tend to also be less capable than official tools. Making custom maps for Source games using Hammer is easier than making custom maps for Super Mario Sunshine using 3DSMax.

This is actually very true. I've come to the conclusion the editor for the game I'm working on (LAZYSHELL, the Super Mario RPG editor), has a lot of shortcomings that I can't modify the engine as I please. In spite of this I've been researching, documenting, and applying the code to where I can modify the engine... But it's still a lot of work, but it's fun work, despite the growing pains.

Pikmin 2 is somewhat difficult to mod. There are tools that exist to streamline the process, but any changes made to the actual code are difficult because the character limit needs to stay the same. Pikmin 1 is notorious for having a completely unique format for, well, nearly everything.

Pikmin 3, on the other hand, is easier to mod than 2.

It's a shame how Super Mario Galaxy 2.5 got cancelled (I was looking so forward to it)

I don't think I've ever even played a mod. Maybe a few Super Metroid ones when I was a teen, but besides that I don't remember any. Are there any good Wii homebrew mods?
