So, I just got done playing the remake of Dragon's Trap on Switch.

It was pretty good, actually. Some really lovely art. It also feels pretty dang accurate to the original game, though this also extends to the difficulty, so newcomers beware. Also, some of the new music might've been just a touch too unenthusiastic for my tastes. Maybe the mixes just sound a little too stereotypically fantasy? I'm not sure.

Anyway, have any of you MFGG duders tried it out? Have you played the original beforehand?

I haven't tried it yet but I'm very interested. I had the original as a child and loved the heck out of it, one of the best games I played back in the day, so this remake was meant for me. Never finished the original though despite, kept getting killed by that mummy dragon. The music disappoints me though, I wish they'd stuck to the feel of the original and just remixed it that way instead of going orchestral, but at least you can play the game WITH the original music.

Man, I'm really psyched to try this out once it hits Steam. I heard about it on a TIGSource post and the guy who made this is an absolute madman. Instead of pitching the game to Sega and getting the source code, he reverse-engineered the entire game to mimic the physics as closely as possible. This guy put his heart and soul into this project and deserves every penny he gets.

Despite how divisive it is, I really like the soundtrack. Very chill and understated. My favorite song I've heard so far is The Danger Zone. Had this remake been released a few years ago, we no doubt would've gotten some uncreative synthesized cover that stuck too close to the original.

This game looks beautiful. I'll probably end up buying it.

I saw some gameplay footage in the background of a ReviewTechUSA video and thought it was some hot new indie game, then I saw the graphics flash to 8-bit and thought "wow they can draw very well but they SUCK at pixel art". Then I saw the title and realized it's a remake of a Master System game hahaha. That explains it.

Ha! I know, right? As good as it was, the original game had some very bleak environments and derpy characters. Check out this concept art of Ben Fiquet trying to translate the pixel art into a higher resolution. When taken literally, Lizardman has this gormless look on his face and a pin-shaped head like a neanderthal. The final design looks a little more focused and heroic.

When upscaling pixel art, it's important to take some artistic liberties and move away from the original design if needed.

I thought it looked good for its day but then I had nothing else to compare it to! No complaints about the art direction though, would love for these guys to give the remaster treatment to some other games, they clearly have amazing talent.
