You will take control of four playable characters which rise against a team that seemingly wants to take over the world - but are their motives really that cliché, or are there deeper motives behind their actions?

I am a bit worried about that. It's still significantly faster than all the sequels, though; after the relative glacial pacing of the Trio Moves in Paper Jam I'm perfectly happy to watch Mario and Luigi do cute little animations prior to the Bros. Moves in this.

While it is nice to see a remaster to this (especially if there's a Paper Mario remaster in the future), I'm wondering if they had some western help on this game if you know what I mean.

not happy about the continued reusage of dream team's art style and assets. it takes a lot of the charm out of superstar saga's designs, especially with enemies.

It doesn't seem to reuse assets? It does reuse the style, but the battle perspective is a bit different. The sprites are new.

the character and enemy sprites and style are reused. just because the poses are new doesn't mean that the style is. odds are the overworld sprites themselves are from paper jam, which also used this perspective, only in 3D.

Are you sure about that? They'd have to redraw all the sprites for the new perspective. Paper Jam's was far less over-the-top than Superstar Saga's was, and the battle poses are dramatically different from Dream Team/Paper Jam's. It's a lot of work, especially considering how much work it is to create sprites in that style in the first place.

I'm quite happy that Alphadream found an excuse to make more Fawful dialogue.

Now that you mentioned it, the Toads in the throne room of Peach's Castle in the introductory cutscene aren't as expressive as the ones from the original game.

you say it's a lot of work yet that effort could've just as easily went towards making an art style more reminiscent of the original.

i'm not saying it's lazy. i mean, it is, but that's not my problem. it's that the style is way less interesting than the original art style which had really interesting designs for things.

Ah. I'm very fond of the classic M&L style, too. I believe the primary reason they made the switch was for the 3D effects. That style doesn't have as much personality as the old style, but it looks very nice in 3D, whereas the old style would look like paper cut-outs.

...Not that I'm opposed to paper cut-outs. It would be really nice if Nintendo could make an RPG like M&L where all the characters looked like paper cut-outs. I would really enjoy that. Genuinely.

...argh...

I loved the old art style but I'm ok with the change really, it's nice to see it in a new light. I'll probably get it.

None of the sprites are as expressive as the original game. Not just in that scene.

Wow, that is just LAZY. Between this, the generally lazy style re-use, the slower fighting, and the less impactful sound effects, I'm not gonna lie... I feel a bit underwhelmed.

They put no effort into retooling the Dream Team/Paper Jam engine.

I haven't played SS, so I'm probably gonna buy this. The sprites aren't as expressive, but they're still in a pretty style so I don't mind too much. It would have been nice to see them carry the cool SS designs over to their new 3Dish style, though.

But at the same time, we're still getting a fair share of new assets to compensate- granted, of characters and locations we haven't seen in 14 years.

Also, I see the design change less as an act of laziness and more as an act of... consistency? The original game was released during a period where most of the recurring Mario cast hadn't been "locked" to their current designs yet (some of them even changing appearance almost every other game, what with Koopas walking on fours in one game and standing upright in another). As such, was the only game in the series to apply AlphaDream's Tomato Adventure-esque quirks to how mainstay Mario enemies were drawn. The devs probably saw it fit to keep them uniform with their later "on-model" looks for this remake.

I don't mind it too much myself, as I think the game looks gorgeous- but I see where you're coming from.

with stuff like troopeas, though, there were still koopa troopas that stood upright. it was a deliberate design choice, troopeas are basically wild koopas.

i see it as done because the outlineless dream team style is very versatile as it is, and now mario and luigi games seem to be coming out every 1-2 years- when previously they released every 3-5 years. the new environments are nice, yes, but they're still 2D, as opposed to previous games that were 3D. that being said i do prefer the 2D environments, but still.

plus, what's the point of staying on-model when the mario and luigi series previously wasn't on-model until recently? it doesn't make a lot of sense.

I really like the look of this game, but, why is there no Switch version, Nintendo? You seem to be biased to DS-es when it comes to Mario and Luigi. WHY???

Because Mario & Luigi has always been a handheld series?
