The switch is handheld.

technically the switch is a handheld.

i think i remember their reasoning being that if they go console they'd have to not use alpha dream's pixel art? which doesn't make a ton of sense. i guess they think that if the resolution is high enough they'd need to do either super high res pixel art, upscale what they've already got, or make hand drawn assets instead.

If they go console, I want it to use hand drawn art that looks like the official art.

You know, a natural evolution of the M&L style is something akin to Wario Land: Shake-it. I would honestly try emulating something like that!

I really like how the game looks. I still personally enjoy the DT/PJ art style myself.

It's kind of depressing how the remixed sprites seemed to lose the heavily cartoony style present in the original game, but I hope everything else will make up for it.

I'm surprised nobody brought up the presence of the NSMBWii hills in the Koopa Cruiser cutscene. I left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth.

I wonder why they felt the need to make the animations so much more realistic and "on model" as it seems. That kind of takes away from one of the major advantages of working with 2D graphics rather than 3D. I do adore the style, but I see no reason as to why they would make it so much less exaggerated

I wish they made the Bowser's Minions game about the Elite Trio instead.

The Elite Trio appears in Bowser's Minion as minibosses. Or at least, Sergeant Guy does in the footage shown.

No 3D. There goes my primary justification for the art style.

Wow. The European box art is much better.

Plus it mirrors the old boxart in terms of design

In regards to the graphics, I'm really not too bothered about the new style despite the fact that I still love the M&L sprites. Really I'm just excited to explore a game I loved with a fresh coat of paint, I can't wait to see all the old places looking fresh and new. I hope they've added a few more things to the game other than just a new art style though.

i looked at some of the new background assets and some of them are just flat out ugly.

Image

the trees look atrocious compared to the originals. everything in the new one is just boring or ugly or both.

i really just do not understand why they threw away the illustrated look just to emulate pre-rendered sprites on a console that can easily handle 3D models. they're throwing away a ton of what were conscious decisions in the originals in favor of changes that just don't make sense or don't work.

It's like they just took like a one minute glance at an original M&L screen and tried recreating it from memory.

Look at the background, there's nothing resembling the original other than the placement of the castle. No hills, no trees, no mountains - just a sickly yellow plain with some barely visible NSMB hills. It probably boils down to Beanbean vs. Mushroom Kingdom, but the background alone shows a worrying lack of effort

Thank you, everyone. My enthusiasm for this game has dropped to the point where I may save $40.

I dunno, the game itself is what matters to me and it's still a really fun game even today. Here's a head to head comparison video and I honestly think it looks fine, even far improved in some instances. The only part is characters at times are less expressive but you won't notice unless you're watching it head to head like in this video. It's fine. I'm not such a purist that I care if a tree looks subjectively worse. Not when the game itself is such a good game.

I'm quite happy that M&L is getting more exposure, but I find it hard to justify dropping $40 on a game that I've already played through countless times just to get a different art style. The Bowser's Minions minigame looks nice and a little familiar, but still not quite worth the purchase.

But Superstar Saga is an excellent game, so a remake of it might draw more fans, which might mean more Bowser's Inside Stories and fewer Paper Jams.

Mind you, I'm a notoriously stingy fellow. I've been eyeing the Doom reboot on Steam ever since its release and still haven't gotten it.

i'm worried because every mario and luigi game in the past 3 years has been made on a 1-year deadline. this is a bad thing because it's very clear that the quality is dropping because of it.
