sonic advance 3, although it was more so that i didn't enjoy it during my childhood, then came back 10 years later to discover that yea, it was actually pretty good.
the game definitely has flaws, for sure, (level design and enemy placement, for instance) but one of the things i enjoyed during my replaythrough was how explorative the game feels. the search for the chao in each zone along with each of the unique partner combinations really helped to give the game a more open feeling, despite the fact that it can be just as linear as the previous games in the advance series if you choose to make it so. in fact, i found myself surprised at how nuanced some of the partner combinations felt. it made them fun to mess around with, and i was pleasantly surprised even further to discover that each combination had some sort of use, no matter how niche that use seemed.
maybe this is unrealistic, but i'd love to see sonic team try to build on the elements that worked well in advance 3 sometime. there's serious untapped potential that, if refined and ironed out, could be made into an excellent sonic game.
