I knew the new character would be the new gameplay style.
At least it's heavily implied that's the case now.

honestly it was reasonable to assume it would be boom sonic in a sort of trifecta of sonic eras. just because he wasn't sonic team's idea doesn't mean they wouldn't add him, like it or not he is his own distinct era of sonic.

that being said, now that we know it's NOT him, it's also reasonable to exert caution. boom sonic would've been the easy way out of representing a more platform-heavy 3D sonic without doing the similar-but-not-quite adventure style sonic. i'm wary if it being a new character since i'd rather see what they can do with what they already have than continue piling on unnecessary one-off characters.

Well think:
Nack is an obscure fan favorite, and his stages could be about shooting. Though hopefully better than Shadow...
And Sally fits right in with the tone of the game, the having to fight against Eggman thing, she could be less action focused and more something else.
And she actually had a lot of prominence during the Sega Genesis. Even Segaworld in Australia had her prominently featured.

sally has only appeared as a cameo in sonic spinball which was developed by sega of america and i highly doubt she would be used in a game developed by actual sonic team. if she is introduced then she would need to be treated as a new character as she would technically be one in the canon of the games.

Alright...so I did set my hopes low. Glad that boom sonic isn't the character.

What I AIN'T glad about is everything else.

Not only do we have ****ing GREEN HILL AGAIN, but it's basically confirmed Generations 2.0. It plays pretty much EXACTLY like Generations, and I don't even like Generations.


And that cat character...is bubsy. I can sense it.

Ok Bubsy would be WAY out of freaking left field.
Even more so than Cloud in Smash.
It would be cool to have a new cool guy or girl though. I do like new Sonic characters.
Oh, I edited the "Bubsy" image to increase the contrast, and it looks like this new guy wears shoes, and Bubsy doesn't.
Oh, there IS a cat character in Sonic named Honey the Cat, but she has too much hair for that shadow.

New Gameplay of classic stage

Looks dreadful to me. The physics are awful, there's no momentum, speeding up seems way too quick and yet you stop on a dime, jumping and falling looks way too heavy and you don't seem to carry your forward momentum when hitting springs. The whole gameplay section just looks like a fight against gravity. Also speed boost, speed boost, springs, speed boost, scripted segment, speed boost.

It's disappointing because I didn't like the Classic Sonic physics in Generations and I figure with Sonic Mania coming out with its perfect physics and great level design, and them having had so long to work on this, we'd get a game that was far better. Admittedly it's only a snippet, but so far nothing they've shown of Sonic Forces has me excited.

Also that music... good lord.

For the actual gameplay, myeh. Getting some Sonic 4 vibes, not in a good way.

For the music, hell, that's more authentic Genesis nostalgia than Sonic 4 ever got. I'll admit it doesn't sound like "main game level" music to me, more like a bonus stage or a multiplayer map or something, but I think you could stick in a classic Sonic game and it'd fit right in. It's quite catchy.

Ah, yes, Sega finally remembered what classic music was like in the good old games like Sonic 4.
Honestly, it sounds like an anime OP converted to a midi file. It's dreadful. Probably they'll give each classic stage this kinda music to differentiate it from modern Sonic, so there's quite some musical pleasure to look forward to.

Visually, the models, textures and lighting all look great. Too bad this doesn't mean anything when the artstyle sucks. Lost World had hands down the worst artstyle out of any Sonic game, but I always felt like they only went for that look because of the simple level geometry they had to use. Now they combined it with Generation's aesthetics, with the end result looking merely like a watered down Generations.

The level design is worse than Generations, too. Springs everywhere. It seems like Sonic forgot to jump. Interestingly enough, Sonic goes to an idle pose for a split second everytime he jumps. Maybe that oversight was missed during testing because you're hardly required to jump from the looks of it.

Now before you accuse me of being a bitter fanboy, it was a joke. Seriously though, what we've seen here doesn't look good. I can only hope there's a great quantity of stages, because else it's pretty sad this game spent so much time in development with the end result being so mediocre at best.
