I love it. I'm actually curious to see what can be made.
Yet you now realize that everyone can make their OCs for real.

These two comments are good indicators.

I can see this being used for many things, both legit and weird.

Eh, it's basically like making your own Dragon Ball character in Xenoverse. Could be fun.

though really all I care about is getting a square on my E3 Bingo card

Falcon Punch is the result of the Sun heating fists. It drives the Blue Falcon. Heating causes destruction of water into the pain, where it then hurts, creating rain. Rain creates flowing water in tears, which can then be converted into other forms through more pain.

Complaining about the OCs is tantamount to complaining about the quality of the upholstery on the Titanic.

However, the boat has been sinking for quite a few years now. At least a discussion on the upholstery is something new.

I'm ok with this, as someone who doesn't automatically sheeple my way into the whole "lol deviantart Sonic OC fwarghhghgh". I think it's cool, but the game still looks meh at best and they still haven't given me a good reason as to why Classic Sonic is in there.

ive yet to see a counterargument to this being included beyond something immature about sonic OCs and furries

does it matter? even at all? the gameplay looks fun and is an actual extension of modern sonic gameplay which is what the series really needs right now, and this'll be a big thing with a lot of people, not just the "cringelords" people are whining about. kids play these games too, and this is something i can definitely see a lot of people getting a kick out of. sonic team embracing this is a great idea

Honestly, I think this is kind of brilliant. They actually went out of their way include something that they knew a large majority of their fanbase sort of wanted (presumably based on the myriad fangames starring Sonic fan characers) but didn't even dare to hope - much less ask - for. In spite of the fact that they almost certainly KNEW that they'd be ridiculed for years on end just for even thinking to include it.

Really, how often do game companies actually do that? Super Mario Maker was pretty much the only time Nintendo ever did anything of the sort, and even then they felt the need to increase the demand themselves by cracking down on Mario fangame developers. Don't get me wrong, Nintendo innovates, but they innovate on their own terms, and they tend to take forever to un-innovate when their ideas go wrong. Sega, on the other hand, is both making a full-on, mainline game that completely embraces people's desire to insert themselves into the Sonic universe AND managing to maintain a friendly relationship with the loyal fans who inspired them to do it in the first place.

Nintendo may release more quality games, and Nintendo may be more reliable, and Nintendo may be more respectable in a lot of ways, but if there's any AAA game developer that does anything CLOSE to listening to its fans and caring about what they want, it's definitely Sega.

Mit wrote:

And that's the worst part, really. 50% of the people who are against the character creator call it either autism, a fetish, or a meme (none of which make any sense in any way whatsoever) and the other half just make "jokes" in which they simply reference the fact that there are a large number of Sonic OC drawings on Deviantart without offering any sort of witty conclusion or thoughtfully rye remark. Yup, fan characters sure are a popular concept that existed previously and some of them are pretty bad! That isn't...even a joke.

I don't even care that much about the Sonic fanbase and in a way I have a bit of disdain for the furry community at large (in spite of the fact that I've designed some humanoid species that could be roughly classified as "furries") and yet it STILL kind of peeves me off for just how mind-numbingly stupid it is. Never before have I seen such an epidemic of mindless flippancy; everyone wants to make the joke, and yet not a single person has the punchline.

It's just a case of people blindly following the pack who makes "funny jokes" rather than having the individuality to make opinions of their own. If they want to be sheep then that's fine, but they'll either play it anyway and make sad jokes to the wind, or they'll say "I'm not buying that crap because I'm edgy and cool" and miss out on a potentially good game. Neither will affect my opinion of the game when it comes out.

I enjoyed Sonic Generations. It's one of the few games I've bothered to get all the achievements on, alongside Shovel Knight and its expansions.

Sonic Generations had level design. It wasn't exceptional, but it suited the speedrun-y gameplay style. It was spectacle over gameplay, and that was fine, because the spectacle was well-done. It felt satisfying to spindash/boost through levels quickly.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1wYD5b4VUw

There's no spectacle here. The music is generic. The camera angle is static. The environment is a haphazard collection of prefabricated floating platforms and the background looks more interesting than the level itself.

The level design is filled with tiny steps to make flashy spindashing impossible, but traditional platforming is stunted by the springs they toss underneath every ledge. The level design has virtually no curvature. The rare few spots where platforming is present occurs with the generic moving block platforming that one sees when someone is making their first game. There are games on this very website that have smarter level design than the design in the trailer.

If one wants a very, very simple way to compare the difference in effort between Generations and Forces, compare the final setpiece of their first stages.

Image

In Generations, Green Hill ends with a massive helix. This is the only time this setpiece is ever used for Classic Sonic. The camera zooms out right before Classic Sonic hits it to get a feel for how big the helix is. As he moves through it, the camera pans ever-so-slightly in-and-out to give the player a feeling of winding motion.

Image

Reused bridge asset accompanied by a collection of harmless enemies. Camera is static.

I will not disagree that Classic Sonic in Forces looks really lackluster.
It's not bad enough to call it bad, but it certainly isn't something that holds your attention.

On another note, I find it really weird they went with such a blocky artstyle again. It feels like they're trying to make it feel classic by going for an abstract artstyle, but ironically the whole premise of Sonic 1 was to avoid being blocky.

they wrote for colors and generations too, i don't quite understand your point

being a constant downer with this is starting to get grating honestly. it's not the best looking game in the world but it doesn't look bad. i've yet to see an actual point to why it's bad beyond "i don't like it", which is fine if you don't, but you don't need to constantly drone on about it like everyone who does like it is wrong.
