Idk. The Wii U was supposed to be Nintendo's 8th gen console, right? If that's the case, is the Switch supposed to be a 9th gen or 8th gen console? I guess its some sort of 8.5th gen thing.

With stuff like the PS4K and whatever Microsoft is doing, it seems a little odd to call the switch "8.5th" gen, since it isn't a hardware revision. Release date? Yeah, it's about the middle of the 8th console generation. But for all intents and purposes, I think it's a 9th gen console.

I don't think the issue is that important, I must admit I barely keep track of what generation is what anymore But it is obviously a successor to the Wii U, not a revision, so it is clearly a generation up Sort of a 3DS vs the DS as opposed to a DSi versus the DS, y'know

I'm tempted to say that it's a 9th generation console. The time between Wii U's and Switch's launch is a bit over 4 years, which is about the same as the time between the launches of the original Xbox and Xbox 360. Besides, console generations aren't that clearly defined anyways. the 3DO is defined to be the starting point to the 5th generation, even though it was closer to the 32X in terms of its processing power than any of the other 5th gen consoles. The Neo-Geo was a 4th gen "console", even when it was more powerful than the 3DO. It's a mess.

I don't see any reason to say it isn't 9th gen. It's the generation after Wii U.

I'd say it belongs to the same generation as PS4 and Xbone so 8

generations are a mess so labels never really mattered to me anyways but if I had to say, I'd say 8.5. I don't think we'll get a clear generation line again after 8, though. ...also, polish > power. power is supposed to be what defines generations, but PS4 and XBO are hardly reaching 1080p 60 fps. Yet they're already moving onto 4k gaming like it's the next big thing, pushing their own 8.5 consoles.
