News story.
AOL's spin on it.

Not too many people use AIM these days, but it was an important piece of Internet history, and it was superior to modern chat protocols in some regards, in that it happily coexisted with other chat protocols (for example, Google accounts could chat with AIM accounts using Pidgin).

This also results in obsolete profile fields on thousands of forums. We'll see what we can do about replacing AIM fields with modern protocols like Discord and Skype on the upcoming MyBB forums.

Aw man... that's the first one I used.
But I really did start to see less and less people using it, to the point where when my version of Trillian couldn't connect to it and I couldn't find a new version, I either went to aimexpress.com, the online version, or just went to Skype.
But I hear all the cool kids use Discord now. Maybe it's time to jump onto there.

I didn't know it was still around. I think I tried to register in like 2015 and the registration page appeared to be broken.

Glad to see it finally sunset. There's some nostalgia there but it's way past its time to go. I'm honestly shocked they wouldn't keep it around and renovate it (you'd figure with verizon, yahoo, aol all together there could be something out of it); this is a better outcome. Those traditional messengers should have been shut down or evolved years and years ago at this point, there's been so many fantastic innovations in the field of Chatting. I hope skype is killed off soon...

I wasn't aware of this until just now but AIM was forced to be inter-operable with other chat protocols, which is probably why it eventually had Google support. Really interesting, would love to see the modern chat apps be forced to do the same tbh

AIM was my life back in the olden days of MFGG, I remember having multiple windows open at any given time. Then I got all antisocial and stopped using chat programs forever.

I used AIM somewhat; if I recall by the time I came around, only a handful of MFGGers used AIM. Windows Live Messenger was what was in by then.

I used AIM for a long time as a child though, because AOL was our browser growing up. I remember those ICONIC chat noises man.

AIM was still my primary chat app going into 2017 (yeah I only had 1 or 2 people left to talk to). I did finally give it up in the spring and I can be found on discord now.

AIM is far from the only obsolete field on forums. We're still lugging around YM and MSN names that have been defunct for a long time now.

RIP AIM you'll still be my favorite.
