Ok, the other thread gave gaming as a quite clear leader in popularity, both in terms of replies as well as poll votes.
Here is a thread where we can decide about which game we want to play.
Again the poll is all about gauging interest and may not decide what we're doing.
If for some reason the "I don't want to play any games" option wins, we'll get back to the drawing board.

Things to consider:

Many of us probably own Mario Kart Wii or Smash Bros. Brawl, and their WiFi service will be shut down in May, so it would be nice to let these gems go with a tournament (heck we could even have 2 tournaments at the same time).

TF2 is likely the most accessible, as it's free to play and on all major platforms.
Possibly that Pokemon simulator too, but what fun is a Pokemon simulator where you can put together any team you like?

You have again multiple options and you can revote whenever you like.
But please: If you vote for a game, and the game is picked, you are also expected to participate!

So I don't always reset the poll just for a single new option, I added 5 slots that can be filled with other suggestions. This is what they mean:

Slot 1: Megaman 8-Bit Deathmatch
Slot 2: -
Slot 3: -
Slot 4: -
Slot 5: -

the problem with Brawl is that its online is horrendous. if we had to hold off until Smash 4 to play Smash online, I wouldn't complain.

however, I'd be more than up to play Mario Kart Wii. that game has minimal lag issues when online.

as for Pokemon, I would use a battle simulator, but you need to assemble a team consisting of Pokemon that you actually have. we could have each participant take a picture of their team as proof or something

EDIT: Mega Man 8-Bit Deathmatch would be fun to play online. free to play and online is easy to set up, I think.

Added 5 slots to the poll for (good) suggestions that pop up in this thread.
Unfortunately that reset the poll, but it shouldn't be necessary to add any new options to it anymore.

The highest vote we have at this point goes to TF2 followed by MK7, with 6 and 5 votes respectively.
That doesn't really sound like a very exciting tournament, does it?

I would only participate if the game was free/libre software. For online multiplayer, the best choices I can think of are...

First-person shooters:
- Xonotic
- AssaultCube
- OpenArena

Real-time strategy:
- Warzone 2100 (limited to 8 players)
- MegaGlest (limited to 4 players)

Other:
- Hedgewars (Worms-like; limited to 8 players)
- Teeworlds (2-D shooter; limited to 16 players)
- Minetest (Minecraft-like), e.g. "Hungry Games" (Hunger Games)

I can't really tell which of these to suggest. There's a Mario faction available for MegaGlest, and Mario skins for Hedgewars, but other than that, I have no way to tell how interested everyone else would be in each of these games. I guess Teeworlds is the most unique out of all of them, so maybe that's the best choice?

Tbh, I don't think most MFGGers play most of those games.

I'm sure some people play some of these kinds of games, but it's hard tell which ones and to what extent, and even at that most probably play similar proprietary games (which are likely better quality in various ways). That's why my best guess for what to suggest is Teeworlds: it's probably the most interesting game out of all of them, and it fits nicely alongside other indie games. It's fun, at any rate.

At the risk of invoking the wrath of everybody in this thread. "I want a different Special Competition" (Yes, I finally voted)
It's looking like the concept of a gaming competition is going to be exceedingly difficult to manage,
preferences with this idea are far too broad, as there are a mass multitude of multiplayer games, and everyone seems to like a different one, a different style, and at times, on a different platform.

We need an idea that falls in line with how the current comps are handled.
Something that everyone can do, and on a medium we all have, something that we can get easily, or for free.

How about a sound effects comp?

I'll also be siding on the "I want a different Special Competition" here as well, because I predict at the rate finding a suitable game for this type of comp, considering how broad our individual preferences for certain types of games we play, not much progress will get done finding a happy medium if all parties just stick to their own gaming preferences on which game we should be playing for this comp and that they refuse to give up what they like to see being played, considering that others will object to the games suggested by one or more people.

I'll reiterate this quote from the other thread:
StrikeForcer wrote:
2. Gaming Competitions: You cant satisfy all MFGGers with the games and fangames suggested and means of playing that are suggested. You are just splitting hairs when you want to suggest a game that would favor all due to human preference, really.

People are still going to split hairs whenever they get the opportunity to.

Mit wrote:

True, but still, finding a suitable game to play for the people to agree on is tedious at best, pointless at its worst, and there is going to be someone who objects to what others are suggesting due to their own biases and or, if not, then facts stating why x game is terrible either played individually or with a group of people with a reason or list of reasons why x game is terrible.

ATTENTION! I am in need of coders to help fix Mario's physics for Mysterious Islandz. The game as it stands, is quite glitchy. If you are good at GM8 and is capable of reading FDE Exi's code, PM me!

the best game to play right here, RIGHT NOW would be Mario Kart Wii. it has better online than Brawl does, and we can't exactly play it past next month. plus, I'm gonna go ahead and assume a lot of people here have it.

I agree with Mit here in that Mario Kart Wii would be a good choice, simply because it's popular and we aren't going to be able to play it online for much longer. While it currently has only five votes, I'm pretty sure we could ask around and get some other MFGGers to participate in it.

I voted for Mario Kart Wii. I think a lot more people have Mario Kart Wii than Mario Kart 7 since it's older and is for an older system (and I don't even have Mario Kart 7).
I would like a Smash Bros competition, but the online in Brawl is horrible so it would be best to wait until SSB4 comes out.

I have Mario Kart Wii and am totally for it being the thing we do if we do a gaming competition, though I can't personally guarantee my own participation (unknowable schedule and all that; also my Wiimote has apparently run away.) I'd certainly try for it, though.

I'm also down with Mario Kart Wii. We must take advantage of that before its Wi-Fi services get shut down.

Question: Did anybody here vote for MK7, but not for MKWii, even though you have both games?
And if so, why?

(And same question the other way round, I guess.)

MarioKart 7 would be easier because we can just create a community.

given the reception of my "are you interested in a wii u" poll (haha my true intentions have been revealed), I think it wouldn't be too bad if we have a Mario Kart 8 comp after it comes out. a lot more people than I had initially thought have a Wii U, or at least are planning on getting one, so it shouldn't be that big of a problem

same goes for Smash, but MK8 is more of an immediate choice. plus, I'd assume that both games are gonna push consoles, so that should help.

Also, MarioKart 8 is coming out in the US on May 30th, 10 days afte Nintendo Wifi connection ends. to fill the gap between the 10 days, if there's a comp during that time period, we can play MK7 and then just move on to MK8
