I'm gonna keep this brief and anti-extravagant. No giant letters, welcome paragraphs or bullet point lists today I'm afraid.
This Music Comp's theme is In The Style Of! Since that probably doesn't say much, let me elaborate. Remember the last competition's theme? Make a Mario Maker-esque song of a level theme for a game that didn't already have that level style in it? Well I'm taking that and taking it up a notch... as well as inverting it, sort of. You're tasked with taking an existing song and making it into the style of something else.
Here's the catch: it has to be either a real life song (i.e. what most people define as recreational music, bands, musicians, that sorta thing) in the style of a certain video game's soundtrack, or a video game song in the style of a conventional band or artist. The correlation has to be blatant - that is to say, you can't just take a MIDI of either and slap on some vaguely sounding instruments that may or may not be in the style of whichever direction you're going in. You have to rearrange, and as far as how much... well, it's a judgement call with each entry that I guess I'll be in charge of keeping an eye on, but as long as there's something noticeably unique about the arrangement you should be in the clear.
"BUT VIETNAM", you may shout from the heavens above, "WHAT IF I DON'T LISTEN TO REEEEAL MUSIC LIKE SOME KINDA NORMIE?". Well... uh, don't enter, I guess? Or go find any old band and study a song or two of theirs real quick and do that. It doesn't have to sound like the entirety of their discography put together, for the record. It can take inspiration from a specific song or album of theirs. It can be anything, from doing Bohemian Rhapsody in the style of the Mega Man X soundtrack, or maybe the LTTP Dark World dungeon theme in the style of Pink Floyd. Of course, those are two classic rock-y examples, but what can I say? I happen to fancy prog rock and its ilk, so have at it! You can do anything you want, of course.
Now be gone. I realized this was the exact opposite of "brief" but I wound up having to explain the concept since it's a bit of a unique one I suppose! Your deadline is exactly two weeks from now, on July 7th, so be there and be ready by then! Now have at it, and make your favourite music song things proud!
