For starters, congrats to Aivenstruz_ for achieving runner-up in the last music comp, but Mors and Juju did pretty good too!

Anyway, I figured I shouldn't sit on this one for too long and forget about it down the line, so I'll start this bad boy up now. Our theme for the next music comp is:

SUPER MARIO MAKER

Did you ever want to play a beach level using the SMB1 look? Or perhaps you wanted a snow level in SMW? Maybe even a new game skin altogether, such as Super Mario Bros. 2? Well, while there are graphics for these new themes for Super Mario Maker that we would like to see, we can't say much for the music.

The point of this competition is to come up with an original piece of music for a new scene in Super Mario Maker. It can be for a beach SMB1 theme, a snow SMW theme, a space-y SMB3 theme, or even a ghost house or airship theme for SMB2 or Super Mario Land. Anything goes! Think of it like what SMM did with the airship and ghost house level themes for the SMB1 skin. It just has to be a theme that doesn't already exist for any of those games. This only applies for the levels themselves and not the level editor music, so remixes will not be accepted (unless it's from a game that has the same melodies throughout, like SMW). Sorry!

The contest will end on May 7th, 2016, so hopefully you can come up with something in that amount of time! Who knows, maybe this would be a good time to play SMM if you haven't and see what you can do! Good luck, everybody!

Great theme.
I'm not going to enter as I'm not a musician but I have a question regardless:
If one composed a theme for the SMW style and remixes weren't allowed, does that mean you couldn't incorporate the main theme of SMW either? Because SMW does that with pretty much every single theme in the game, and the new airship music in Mario Maker did it as well.

Oh right, I guess I should clarify.

If the game you're borrowing from has a lot of repeating melodies throughout, then it's fine to remix it. If the melodies are pretty varied, though, then remixes won't be okay.

Edit: And also, could you make music for the editor? It also has themes.

I'm pretty sure Hypernova's entry does not qualify.
I think Yuudachi's one qualifies, even if I can't tell which game it's supposed to imitate.

It plainly says in the OP that the point of the competition is to make something original, with the only exception being themes for games with a lot of tracks using the same general melody like Super Mario World.

I really do think that, while I get the point of being generally against remixes is to avoid MIDI dress-up nonsense, these competitions would have a higher turn out if the general ban on remixes was overturned. Unless there isn't a ban on remixes and the last few competitions have just been anti-remix by coincidence.

Still, my point stands. And yes, I say this as someone who composes music, so it's not an issue of laziness.

The point is mainly to give these games something original like it would have been given had the game come out with it originally. The Super Mario Bros. 1 airship theme could have just been a remix in it of itself, but it got its own theme. The same goes for the ghost house theme it received, along with SMB3. I do see that remixes would garner higher interest, though. This is just to make things a little more authentic. Who knows, maybe the anti-remix law will be repealed.

Actually, I think in the other music competitions, remixes were allowed.
