This is my first attempt at a mini game competition so I'll see how this goes.

Image

I'm able to keep this color scheme and still be able to qualify right? If not, I'll change it up.

Well played with that pallete!
Though deceptive at a glance, it does appear to adhere within the 4 shade limit of the DMG.
I think you're good with that. ;)

Edit:
On closer inspection, you are using a transparency effect.
make that solid and you're good.

Darn, I was kind of interested in doing a minigame comp, but I'm not really a fan of this theme. Doesn't give much to work with gameplay-wise. Guess I'll have to wait a few months for the next one.

Oh, trust me, working with this theme is a royal pain,
at least it is if you are shooting for accuracy.

This is also one of the few themes that will allow you to go to an extreme level, as I tried doing by simulating the DMG pixel matrix, and Guinea seems to be going even beyond that with his entry.

The title is provisional and is a small game, where you will be loved I can continue to program it.
I know that you criticize for bugs, some sound effects missing, missing music, too sized application and missing longevity.

It looks nice, but the camera gets really messed up at times with the scrolling.

Everything is done except for the boss and a few bug fixes (and maybe add a difficulty level or two). My only regret is not being able to make more than one level in this entry. Perhaps after this competition I will release a version with more levels.

I got bunch of features dropped from my idea pool. But at least I got something other than platformer. Driven by my real life work and laziness.

I'm not sure I'll make this one. I've got something, but it's incomplete and I'm not 100% certain I can finish it in time because I've been working on another project.

Demo (sans boss and ending)

Except for the boss, pretty much everything is there. If for some reason I don't finish it, this demo will be my entry.

EDIT: The flicker option is basically there to help with screenshots and video recording. Many objects toggle their visibility every step when the setting is on to better reflect the Game Boy's normal limit of 40 sprites being drawn at a time, but it has the unfortunate side effect of making half the sprites invisible when taking screenshots. Videos have the same problem at 30 FPS (video sharing sites like YouTube have that frame rate).

I can tell from this image alone that you are using too many colors in your background, which will likely get you disqualified.

Comp Leader wrote:

  • (Updated) You can (and should) use 3 layers. There is a "Background" layer with 4 colors, and two "Object" layers. The Object layers can have 3 colors each + transparency. So you end up with a total of 10 colors. Check out the image in the update above to see the GBC's default colors. Of course you can just give all layers the same set of colors, but try to take advantage of the multiple layers.

Coconuts and Guinea's entries look like the only entries around here that really were built around being 4 colors only and were enhanced then. All others kinda look like GBC games.
I also wanted to come up with an entry myself, but I'm busy, so I'll pass. Next time.

Supernova's game has the palettes down but it seems a bit odd for the tiles to use a sprite palette. It IS technically possible to use more than 40 sprites at a time on a real Game Boy, but there's trickery involved. I wouldn't disqualify him for it if I was a judge, but using a sprite palette for tiles is a bit weird nonetheless.

Yeah, I wouldn't disqualify him either, but it just doesn't feel as authentic as yours or Guinea's. (Albeit it looks fantastic)

I just got an idea. Dunno if I can do it in a matter 15 hours, though. Also, looks good, Cap'n and Hypernova.

^Try. I think it can be done, and you can always just submit what you have :)
Think of it as a challenge maybe, to focus on the most essential parts of your plan and train your time management. I'm in a similar situation, as I have planned a bit too much for the short time I ended up actually being able to work on it, so now I'm cutting stuff left and right to get a playable game ready in time, but it should still be interesting to play.

Worst case, you lost 15 hours, but you still learned something useful. Best case: you win a badge and maybe have a good prototype for a future MFGG submission (if your entry is Mario related)!

Fencing is a game that doesn't really have much to do with the sport but I was too lazy to change the logo so that's how it shall be.

You play as either Mario or Luigi and your objective is to rescue Princess Peach from the clutches of the Koopa Kingdom... or is it?

There are two version; a "default" version with colors and stuff and a "monochrome" version that only uses four shades of gray.
