Here is the topic that talks about the idea we're trying to go for: viewtopic.php?f=22&t=12289

In short, the idea is that a couple of members reserve 24 hours in their lives for a programming competition that tests skill, speed, creativity and your ability to use time well. You do not need to use the full 24 hours for programming, but the more efficiently you use them the higher might be your chance of winning.

You can not use previously made engines, but you can copy-paste a few lines of code from past projects based on the "fair use" principle, to get off the ground more easily. This is to motivate you to try totally new ideas and not just shell out another platformer.

No teams.

Use of ripped graphics and sounds is allowed.

In this topic, please post with the times (preferably converted to GMT) when you could take part in such an event. The most probable dates are weekends, starting on Friday, ending on Sunday, so try to update your status every week for the weekend.

So:
1) check your schedule for next week.
2) post your times for THIS week here.
3) hope that enough people have time.
4) If not enough people have time, wait until next week and repeat.

Remember, if you only have 20 hours or 23 hours or something, you should still post. Chances are very few people actually have 24 hours to spare so it should be fair enough. And programming for 24 hours might not be very healthy anyway.

The first weekend will be April 8th (Friday) to April 10th (Sunday).

I might write a little tool that helps us organizing this within the following week, until then please use this topic.
(Or someone else might try their hands on this? It'd need to be web based.)

Example sign-up:
Quote:
Friday 6:00pm - Sunday 10:00am GMT
Sunday 1:00pm - Sunday 11:00pm GMT

Which would mean you'd have a gap of 3 hours on Sunday between 10:00 and 13:00, so if e.g. the competition is scheduled from 12:00 Saturday till 12:00 Sunday, you'd lose 2 hours, but other people might too.

So, don't hesitate and post your times for next week. The earlier we have a good amount of people, the better.

Post questions, suggestions, and complaints ITT, too.

^Yep, sounds right to me. Might be one hour off due to daylight saving, but it doesn't need to be that accurate, so, yea, do it like Mason did.
EDIT: Oh wait a second, you made a mistake. Your timezone is only 7 hours behind GMT, so you should never be able to reach tuesday, if your last time is Sunday. So the last part should be Sunday night till Monday morning. (I corrected it for you btw)

I'm always free on Thursday nights and Fridays and Saturdays. I won't post a time zone or something similar cuz it's doesn't matter me. Anything you agree on is fine by me.

I should be able to pull off something for any those particular days, unless something really pressing comes up (which is unlikely).

Also, Jacksonville is GMT -5.

Cool, three people already. That might be enough to have it this weekend. Since I have to pick the theme, I won't be able to attend, but I might enter for fun to see what I can do.

Interesting concept.I have free time in Saturday and Sunday and a part of Firday(4:00 PM to up).Of course, I need time to take a shower, eat,do homework, groom a Bernese dog.....I will try specific the time periods.
I would have issues to do a platform engine (or I can accept some tolerable bugs in collisions with blocks and not copy my mature platform engine)Maybe, by creativity, I can do a game without needed a collision system.I need focus more in fun than a perfect collision.

EDIT1:

So I am in GMT -3.
So in my time zone I will have disponible time:
Friday : 5:00 PM-1:00 AM
Saturday: 10:00 AM - 1:00 AM
Sunday : 10:00 AM - 11:00 PM
of couse I need do other things in these intervals, but that will br a litte extra challenge to this comp and maybe a fun part of this.

I don't know how will avoid the cheating(despite the theme will post only in the comp's begin).I think that most people have more free time in a weekend than during week. But I don't know how the USA's school system works to confirm my setence.

okay let's see if i can convert these time zones correctly without destroying the concept of time in the process

(All times in GMT)
Monday: 7:00 PM - 11:00 PM AND 5:00 AM - 10:00 AM
Tuesday and Wednesday: 7:00 PM - 10:00 AM
Thursday: 7:00 PM - 11:00 PM AND 5:00 AM - 8:00 AM
Friday and Saturday - 3:00 AM - 8:00 AM
Sunday - 1:00 AM - 10:00 AM

if this doesn't work out, you could always do the whole "you must use only 24 hours" concept

probably an easy way to enforce the 24-hour rule would be to set up (possibly private between the host and each competitor) repositories for those entering

the first comment (one or more blank game/text files, or allowed pre-existing files such as resources) is your start time, and your final game must be committed <=24 hours after that time

actually if some people committed often that could be a neat way to see the evolution of the project, assuming the repositories are made public afterward (if it's okay with the competitor), although i guess for a 24-hour competition it wouldn't be all that interesting

of course this can't really prevent people from cheating, but

Alright, here is my suggestion:

Begin: Saturday 1:00 AM
End: Sunday 1:00 AM
(GMT)

There's a tolerance span of 1 hour.
Everyone who wants to enter can enter, you do not have to be on the following list!
Candidates that match these times so far are, with their respective starting times in brackets, if their timezone was posted (though, be sure to double check, no guarantees that I did this right :P):
Mason (Friday 6:00 PM)
Slash (?)
VinnyVideo (Friday 8:00PM)
lordcyber (Friday 10:00PM)
Mariobros. (?)

And I repeat: It is not necessary to use the full 24 hours. If you need sleep: sleep, if you're hungry: eat.

I hope at least 3 people will show up at the given time and start with their entries. Also it is possible to join later.

So it's 4 AM Saturday till 4 AM Sunday at my time zone. That should be good enough.
So is the theme of the minigame set or still thinking about it?

for me, it almost works, except the last 5 hours of Sunday have me going to work, along with the first 2 hours of Saturday still being at work

i could do what time i have in the 24 hours, and then give myself an extra 7 hours after work on Sunday

There is only one hour in Sunday, and that's in GMT. You should have GMT-something, living in Canada, so the competition should over for you on Saturday evening.

1:00 PM?
The post says AM.
And this is why I hate the AM/PM system~
1:00 is obvious in Europe, and it's obvious what 13:00 means. So yeah, 1:00 AM, at night. That's the time when it starts (GMT), so it's 18:00, or 6:00PM for you on Friday till Saturday.
