Congrats to those who entered in the sprite comp. It seems that for winning, I get to start up the drawing comp, so without further ado.
Welcome to the first Drawing Competition under the new rules of 2014!
You can read these new rules here.

There have been times when we see something in an early trailer for a game that just doesn't show up in the final version, or later on someone will crack the game open and find all sorts of secret goodies that could have been. Thats right folks, the theme of this drawing comp is:

The Theme: Beta Elements
Image

  • You can draw any sort of picture as long as it involves beta elements from any Mario related games.
  • Wario, DK, and Yoshi series related entries are also acceptable.
  • You are NOT limited to just characters. You are free to draw power ups, or landscapes as well, as long as they are related to a beta element.
  • To avoid any confusion or issues, please post a link to a picture (or a quote if no pictures exist), to verify you entry as an actual beta element.
  • This is more of a suggestion than a rule, but try to be creative with your choice (as in, no "Purple Yoshi" for Yoshi's Story please).

Having trouble finding some beta elements to choose from? Try Mariowiki. Go to any page for a game, and click the "Beta Elements" link to get a whole list of different beta elements to work with.

Time limit: until Wednesday, 26th of March 2014
NO extensions! You can submit your entry as long as it's still March 26th anywhere on the planet, even if you yourself don't live in that timezone.

EDIT- Sorry if this makes a second topic. I submitted it but it isn't showing up so I'm submitting it again.

I actually like this theme a lot! It's very interesting.

I have an idea. . . I think I'll do that girl that appeared for a second in the early Super Mario Sunshine trailer. When we submit our entries, should we put a link or something to the page that shows what we drew in fact was a beta element, or will you just believe us?

Thats probably a good idea, I'll add that to the rules.

I'm assuming we're not allowed to draw two different beta elements from different games?

Do computer programs like Inkscape count, or does it have to be a hand drawn image? Because even though I draw okayish by hand, I don't have any experience with a scanner...

Awesome! This sounds a really good theme for me to work with! Are we allowed to do beta levels? Such as beta NSMB levels or level with prototype graphics?

Chaoxys has the final word on how he wants this competition to be, so these are just my own opinions to the above questions:

I don't see a reason why to not allow this, if you can think of two beta elements that would work well together.

Do computer programs like Inkscape count, or does it have to be a hand drawn image? Because even though I draw okayish by hand, I don't have any experience with a scanner...
If you have a cellphone, you can also take a picture of your drawing from above and upload that. Also according to the rules:
Drawing Competition Rules wrote:
Collages or photos/photo edits are not allowed. Entries must be drawn either by hand, in a digital drawing tool of your choice or a combination of both. Hand drawn images can of course be photographed, but preferably scanned.
... so I think Inkscape should be ok.

You're not allowed to do edits/collages, so you can't create a tileset and then make levels with it. If you want to manually draw a full level, I guess that could work though.

Oh, very nice! I love this theme! I think I'm gonna enter this one as I already have an idea on mind. Sunshine was going to have a railway system to get from place to place, so I'll probably be doing something among those lines.

Yes, if you can sum up a level concept in a picture then it is allowed. I think the bonus art in DKCR and DKC:TF is a good example of this.

As for the other questions, it's pretty much what Guinea said.

Heh, kinda weird seeing something from SMW's beta, considering I used to mod that game and saw those objects used all the time. Looking good so far though! Though if you ask me, the carving in the red coin looks a little off-center, just some constructive criticism...

...The Japanese version of the game contains an extra ARC that was removed from later releases, named message.szs. Its only contents are two message files, named station.bmg and system.bmg. One contains a list of stations and harbors for the levels, while the other contains dialogue for buying tickets and getting them stamped. As a number of the locations listed are landlocked, it must be concluded that these files belong to a scrapped train system for the island...

I decided to do several beta elements at once from a game that doesn't get nearly enough love...

@Novak Nice so far! If the lines were a bit thinner and the drawing smaller, it would look a lot like the graphics from Yoshi's Island!

@DJ Coco I didn't even know that was a thing in the beta, but I like your drawing, there's a lot of detail to it.

Anyway, here's some more work on mine:

@Novak You probably should, I'd like to see more in that style actually!

...and here we go again, I'm not quite sure what else to add to be honest, so I guess unless I think of something it's off to the polishing phase...
