Mario has a long history of spinning off into new genres. Golf, racing, baseball, parties, RPGs, soccer, Tetris, tennis, fighting, volleyball, even those weird educational things! Currently relevant, Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle combines both franchises into a turn-based tactics game. This impressive repertoire may leave you wondering "What hasn't this man done?"

I'm afraid that's the question I intend to pose to you; you must bring your newest and freshest game ideas to the Marioverse! Here's the rundown:

  • Create sprites for a hypothetical new game distinctly (and mechanically) different from any existing Mario game: a stealth game, a first-person shooter, a dungeon crawler, a match-3 puzzler, a wrestling competition, a dating sim, whatever.
  • You are not strictly limited to new ideas. You can make a platformer as long as it's not just a platformer, just as you could make a turn-based tactical game if you were to make it more about large-scale warfare than shooting Rabbids from behind cover.
  • There is no limit to how much you can make. You can just do character animations, tiles, or even a full mockup if you're feeling up to it. However, however much you do, the main concept of the game must be clear from the sprites themselves; don't make a brick block and say it's part of a party-based puzzle action metroidvania.
  • Don't be discouraged if you're having trouble coming up with an idea! We've got a great Concept Corner you can delve through for inspiration, or you could do a look through Steam. There're a lot of game ideas out there, I'm sure you can find one that grabs your interest.

And that should be about it! I believe you have until Tuesday, August 22nd to submit your... submissions. Let's get the creative juices flowing and see if we can generate some awesome concepts!

Wow, these sprite comps are coming out like hot cakes (probably to make up for that hiatus). Anyways this one has a really interesting idea, and hopefully I will find some to participate in this competition (I mean hey, the more practice the better, plus who knows I could get a shiny sliver badge from this or more likely another green badge, but who knows.)

Someone should make Super Mario Vore Fetish where you have to eat as many mushrooms as possible and if you eat a goomba you explode

Because of this whole Mario + Rabbids Kingdom battle thing, are we allowed to do crossovers?

I'm afraid the sprite comp rules (which are archived for some reason) say no.

Sure, but it's still got to clearly be a Mario game.

I'm going to be honest.

Nothing about these sprites other than your title for them tells me they are Mario, Pac-Man styled. Mario looks squished, and his torso looks like a LEGO. In addition, the Starman could use some work and I don't know what the tiny sprite is (though I assume it's supposed to be mushroom as pellets, which I honestly think coins would fit better tbh). Furthermore, Mario has ghost characters so why not use them to simulate the Pac-Ghosts?

They look nice, though they seem more like NES SMB edits than custom graphics.

i know what you mean about them being edits, but they aren't. it's all a wip, and i'll make more animations and a tileset.

There's better names, but let's just dodge the bullet and call it Super Mario Bowl

Some earlier sprites went unused after a change of plan

The world has always needed a Mario-themed (American) football game. It doesn't hurt that the graphics are awesome, too!

It should be noted that it's impossible to have just one point in American football, though. It's also very difficult to have four points, since that requires two safeties, and safeties don't happen very often.

Very true, but I imagined since it'd be a simplified Football with fewer players, the points could also be gained in smaller numbers overall.

Will admit those numbers were chosen at complete random anyway lol

Got mine done, and at first I wanted to do a Crash Bash styled Mario Party, and then school happened so all I could do was this: Mega Mario ~~Maker~~ to challenge myself a little I only used the NES palette with the SMB1 artstyle and color rule, but there are still tons of Megaman references basically I thought what if Nintendo made SMB Lost Levels/SMB2J more megaman like. Anyways I hope you like it.

Finished mine.
I tried to go for a Capcom Quiz style look for mine while at the same time applying that familiar Mario aesthetic.
I chose to use the 4 color GameBoy style as opposed to something less limited because of how simplistic it would look in the end.
