Welcome, one and all, to the long-awaited second sprite competition of this year! To dive into things right away, your goal is to sprite any of Bowser's minions that Mario and co. have fought against over the years. This can be anything from the humble Goomba to the wicked Bullet Bill, or even the well-trained Hammer Bro to the simple Podoboo. There are, however, a few things to keep in mind:

  • No bosses. Minions come in all shapes and sizes, but the ones we're talking about are those that appear quite a few times. You won't be able to sprite Bowser, Boom Boom, the Koopalings, or any other enemies of the sort.
  • Although the theme is Bowser's Minions (if mainly to tie in to the new Mario & Luigi game coming out), you are free to sprite any other enemy the Mario Bros. have fought against, such as Cobrats or Squiglets! Again, no bosses, please.
  • All sprites must have been created AFTER this competition has started. Do not resubmit a sprite sheet you made a year ago for this contest.
  • Please limit your entry to 1 type of minion. You can sprite said minion with as many frames of animation as you wish.

And that's it! You'll have until July 10th, 11:59 PM EST to get your sprites done; a whole 2 weeks! Best of luck to you all!

Can we sprite in any style we wish? If I were to enter this contest, I would create a Paper Bpb-omb since it's relatively quick and my more complex sheets (i.e. Koopa Troopas) are now in the sheeting process. As such, I don't think they'll count anyway.

You can, but bear in mind that this is a sprite competition.

Okay, but I was speaking hypothetically anyway. Even with the new art direction, my personal take on Paper Mario still requires a lot of time. I doubt two weeks is even enough to complete half the sheet and I shouldn't spread myself too thin regardless.

Good to see this thing up and running! The one-minion rule should produce some interesting results. However, is the limitation to include exactly one minion, or one type of minion? Can I sprite a platoon of regular Koopa Troopas, or am I limited to one?

By all means, sprite as much of the same minion as you want!

Eh, two weeks is usually how long these contests last (which seems to work out for a lot of people), and it doesn't have to be a giant entry, by any means. A single sprite will be enough to get you entered.

Still a WIP. Wanted to go with one of my favorite enemies from SM3DW. He's not the most exciting, but I still think he's neat.

Does it have to be a sprite sheet or just a pixel art?

It doesn't have to be a sprite sheet, per se; I was just listing frames of animation as something one could potentially do. Feel free to do regular ol' pixel art if you wish.

to clarify, this is pixel art only, right?

Awesome!

And Here is my WIP:

Sorry about some stuff being in the transparent background. I'll get rid of it when it's finished.

Cruise Elroy is open to the idea of me submitting one of my Paper Mario "sprites," so I think you're fine.

I think I might enter this. (Yay, first sprite comp for me.) For some reason, I feel like doing tanooki goomba.

When I say "pixel art," I mean in the sense that you place each pixel individually. In this case, I would classify sprite sheets as an extension of pixel art.

I think the argument here is that pre-rendered stuff like Donkey Kong Country is considered "sprites" even though they're technically not pixel art. Or if you made vector graphics and laid them out in a sheet, they would be sprites, like in Super Meat Boy.

Pixel art is an artwork where you definitively placed each individual pixel with intent.

That's what I did.
No offense, but that's already been said, like, five times.
Can we get back on-topic, please?

That is on topic; I'm not posting about my lunch. The last post about what is and isn't pixel art didn't solidify it. I'm entering this contest.

Here's my entry:

It's my boy, the carrot man from Super Mario RPG in more of a 2D SNES-style stationary enemy portrait style. On thing I really like about SMRPG tho is that all of the enemies were so animated and expressive, the polar opposite of how most RPGs depicted their enemies at the time. Good job SMRPG!
