So many fantastic entries for a fantastic competition! Here's my top 5 votes with a few comments.
Cruise Elroy: Wow, just wow. That entry is absolutely fantastic, and to me really feels like what a potential SMB4 on the NES would've been like. The palette used is amazing, too, and the atmosphere feels really Mario, while also fresh. Mors: While it mostly feels like SMB1 with a fresh coat of paint, the sprite quality is still fantastic. A bit of messy dithering here and there, but overall still a fantastic picture to look at. The palettes are really well-chosen here too. Q-Nova: While I don't really think this is what SMB4 would've been like, I dig the color choice myself. The idea of making the first world a park is also something I can get behind instead of the usual grasslands. I don't think SMB4 would've taken that route, but it's still a nice scene regardless. Lovintendo: I really do not like the idea of having a NSMB-styled ground. But yet, it looks really good here. The color choice once again is great, contrasting really well with the black background. Plus, the sprite quality is simply great. HansAgain: Albeit way too stylized and un-Mario, I think it looks great. Definitely not a suitable art direction for SMB4 in my opinion, but something unique and good-looking anyway. Perhaps ti could be used for a Metroid-vania styled Mario game.
Also, honorary mentions go to DarkSideStrike and SuperArthurBros. Unfortunately, I can only vote 5 entries.
