Mit gave me permission to start this comp.

This theme is.... Your Interpretation of various Mario Series Backgrounds.

See...backgrounds, like foregrounds, are a staple of game design that sets the theme of the levels you go in an play as. The Mario series has a plethora of surreal and fantastic backgrounds that help make the settings come alive. What you are doing is a reinterpretation of the backgrounds shown in the games. 3D Mario games also are acceptable sources

Rules:
- All must be custom-made as in, drawn by you. No edits to existing ones whatsoever.
- Minimum size should be 512x432 pixels. Template available: http://i.imgur.com/k4chPRN.png (Make sure you Right-Click and Save-As)
- Submissions must include the parts made for construction of your entry arranged in a spritesheet. They may be separate files than the main submission which is the assembled background (Ex: http://mfgg.net/index.php?act=resdb&par ... 1&id=32031)
- BGs you made have to be contextually fitting in the Mario series.

Finally! I was waiting for the next Sprite Comp to happen for a very long time. Nice theme, anyway. I'll try to see if I could cook up a background in time.

I may use this as an excuse to make some BGs for MM. Two birds, one stone.

I would make something, but I'm not good at drawing backgrounds at all.

Yes, I'm pretty sure.

Isn't that what a great community is for? Helping push your boundaries? Increasing your expertise? Trying new things can be pretty rewarding. ;)

As much as I dig the phrasing of that, I gotta agree with Technoflops there, I was hoping for a Sprite Comp to come back, and it's about the one thing I master the least... Whoop dee doo XD

But hey, gotta grin and bear it  Don't count me in yet, I still gotta figure out what the heck could I possible sprite for a good background, but at least the theme is definitely interesting to me too.

So where should I post the parts? Should I put a link to it in here?

I don't think I'll be entering this one after all, sorry. I really wanted to make something that could be for this and Midas at the same time, but some irl stuff has come up (went over that in the MM topic), plus, I can't think of any BGs needed for MM that would actually fit a Mario game setting since most of the BGs I have to make would be for the late game. I guess they could fit in one of the Mario RPGs but even that might be stretching it. Oh well, maybe next time.

There is one question that I have about this competition. Are we allowed to take a certain theme that is found in the Mario series and add a little twist into it (a couple examples would be a flooded underground cave, and a mostly destroyed castle)? Because that is what my idea for my entry will be.

That's actually been an underlying issue I've had with Sprite Comps since pre-split, going as far back as 2009 at the very least. They should really be renamed "Pixel Art Competitions" if the unspoken requirement to partake in them is that it's pixel art. I mean, I could be wrong and maybe at some point down the road vector art was made 'tourney legal' or however you'd put it in layman's terms, but in that case what really separates them from regular Drawing Comps then?

these are still strictly pixel art as far as i know, none of them have accepted vectors iirc

they are not vector art
