Sprite Competition #1: "Super" Donkey Kong
because delays are bad
but not actually "Super Donkey Kong", because that was the Japanese name for Donkey Kong Country.
In 1983 Nintendo released the critically acclaimed Mario Bros., starring plumbers Mario and Luigi ridding the streets of Brooklyn of various sewer critters.
In 1985, Nintendo took this formula and adapted it to a sidescrolling platform, thus creating "Super Mario Bros.". Big chucks of SMB's gameplay rely on Mario Bros.
This is an alternative world, in which Mario Bros. was not released. Assuming the last game to feature Mario was 1982's Donkey Kong Jr., he's now set to return in a sidescrolling platform adventure adapted from Donkey Kong/Donkey Kong Jr./Donkey Kong 3. That means no pipes, no bashing enemies from below, no turtles and no Luigi. What would it look like?
Your job is to make sprites that may be seen in a Mario sidescrolling game if Mario had remained a carpenter. What sorts of creatures and worlds would he face? Would he be more reliant on hammers? Would there be more oil and fire? Would the entire game take place in a city? Remember, Mario's trade skill is now
Carpenty, not plumbing. Turtles don't bother him, but perhaps the likes of giant termites, woodpeckers or beavers would. You decide.
You can only use 1980s Donkey Kong games as a reference and it would be wise to keep it "Nintendo-y". Nintendo would make the game fun and colourful, and though theme large parts of the world on the idea of carpentry, wouldn't force Mario to get our a hacksaw and start using it. Mario vs. Donkey Kong and its sequel don't really count here. Mario would solve problems by jumping on wood... or something. Of course, he might find himself in an alternative mushroom kingdom, where fireballs have captured princesses.
Be imaginitive, whether that be mockups or useful sprites or whatever. It's fairly open ended but it's the first in a while and it would be nice to get as many entries as possible.
REFERENCES
I'd have a picture of Donkey Kong 3 but MAME isn't being pleasant with it and I'm not sure if it would help that much.
Winners of course get to decide the next competition. I'll set a preliminary time limit of two weeks but seeing as that would bring us up to Christmas Eve, things might overlap a bit.
Good luck
