Super Mario Bros. Odyssey by smbmaster99

Image

It's a Hello Engine game... and it's creative and fun! Super Mario Bros. Odyssey is one of the few games to land in the center of the Venn Diagram of "Hello Engine" and "well-made fangame." SMB Odyssey also sits at the happy intersection of "top-notch level design" and "oodles of worlds," so you'll be playing for quite a long time. While SMB Odyssey has a fairly traditional gameplay style, each level feels like a fresh new experience. The levels might not be revolutionary, but they never grow boring or predictable, and each stage is very well-executed. Similarly, while the storyline is based on the original Super Mario Bros., there are enough twists and turns to keep things interesting. The game boasts a solid soundtrack, and smbmaster99 was prudent in changing many of the default graphics (especially the player sprites) from the base engine. Another nice feature is that both Mario and Luigi are playable, and each Mario Bro. possesses distinctive strengths and weaknesses - Mario can wall-jump and has smoother mechanics, while Luigi is the better jumper, at the cost of less precision when changing directions. The only downside is the game crashes every couple of levels on my Windows 8.1 machine, which is a bit of a headache for those using newer operating systems - although the levels were enjoyable enough to justify replaying them, which is a testament in itself to the quality of the game.

If you're going to make a game using a premade engine like Hello's or CatY's, use this game as a model of how to use an engine! Add new gameplay elements, change the graphics, and make the game your own. Make games, not clones.

It indeed is a good game, especially the level design, and so many levels. I believe huge effort has been put into it.

Luigi is slightly more fun to play as, despite his weird fire greens - Actually they are interesting =) The charge up jump is very useful in the last worlds.

Hey - has anyone had 10 000 coins in one playthrough, is it possible?
