Fun in Space by Someguy

Spoiler:

Fun in Space has perhaps the worst graphics of all the games that have ever been submitted to MFGG.

And that's a major part of what makes it so fun!

Fun in Space's graphics are almost entirely based on sprites that were declined from the MFGG mainsite. These range in quality from "cute but not terribly useful" to "what were these guys thinking?" - including, but not limited to, a mangled photo of Bill Cosby licking an ice cream cone. Many of the sprites are downright broken, and almost everything clashes severely with the other graphics in the game. Normally, I don't praise a game for bad graphics, but Fun in Space intentionally chooses the worst possible graphics for comedic effect - and there is plenty of comedy in this game.

The unique graphical style might catch your attention and produce some giggles, but Fun in Space's excellent SHMUP gameplay will keep you playing. Each level has its own distinctive flavor, and the game is long enough to offer a good deal of variety without becoming repetitive. There's a nice variety of enemies, bosses, and power-ups, and the unlockables add to the replay value. Someguy consistently makes good choices of background music and sound effects, too. The original version of Fun in Space was released in late 2010, but even if you've played the 2010 version, the newly-updated version offers a lot of new content.

In short, you should go to space. You'll have fun.

Congrats Somguy with another game worth a chuckle. And I just added it to the wiki GOTM article.

Btw, I wonder how did he acquire those declined sprites.

Cliax Codec is a combination of top-down and third-person shooter. The gameplay will blend platforming, puzzle and shmup elements together to create a unique gameplay experience. You will take control of four playable characters which rise against a team that seemingly wants to take over the world - but are their motives really that cliché, or are there deeper motives behind their actions?

There was a minigame competition a while back in which you had to use declined sprites that were posted by a staff member. I believe that's were he got them from.

Where's the download for this game?
Edit: Oh, I got it. But why has the game been released in dec 2010 and has won the
game of the month of May 2013?

Fun in Space was originally posted on the main site in December 2010, but Someguy recently released an updated version that offered a boatload of new unlockables and other features. Also, the Game of the Month award went on hiatus for a couple of months after The Split, so Fun in Space never got an opportunity to be GOTM when it first came out.

I kinda miss making minigames like this, I keep planning extravagant concepts and release next to nothing. Even though it's probably not the technical best game I made it's one of my favorites, it was fun to make and then expand on, there weren't any super major issues in development or any other things to sour my look back on it and it seems to be recieved nicely.

While I have still sort of fallen into the "trying to make a major project" problem as some people I talk to might know, I'm still gonna try and toy with a few smaller projects of this size, starting with a new attempt at a minigame comp entry! One I doubt would compare to Fun in Space in craziness or scope, but I'll still try for something unique. Also something something quality gameplay yeah
