Mario Cave Escape by techmario

Image

For years, Techmario has been one of those talented contributors who seems to fly under the radar, but this is finally the month he earns a Game of the Month award with a very solid minigame, which won the mining-themed Minigame Competition #30 in a landslide. In Mario Cave Escape, Mario has tumbled down a deep hole, putting him just out of reach of terra firma. In order to climb back into the sunny world of the Mushroom Kingdom, you have to gather 20 pieces of rope hidden throughout a cavern of not-inconsequential size. These rope sections might be hidden in plain sight, or they might be stashed under a rock or hidden inside a barrel. Some ropes require a great deal of excavating to find, and a few pieces can be purchased in exchange for the coins sprinkled throughout the area. Unfortunately for our hero, these caverns also happen to be crawling with meanies, and like the Hydra of Greek myth, another Goomba, Koopa, or Spiny drops into the maze for every enemy you squish. For that reason, you'll have to be on your toes as you explore the cavern. Mario Cave Escape is one of the few complete games to use an M&L-inspired engine, and the engine does a good job of capturing the feel that made games like M&L: SS so much fun. The graphics generally look nice, and the remix of the Yoshi's Island underground theme is a treat for the ears as well. This game could do with a little more polish in certain areas, but aside from some very small beefs, Mario Cave Escape is one cave you won't want to escape from too quickly. It's a good one.

And in case you missed the memo, The Purple Coin, now available in its finished state, happens to be one of the best minigames MFGG has ever seen. I just hate to hand out two GOTM awards for the same game in an eight-month span.

Not Minigame Mayhem? Congratz. I hoped it would get to be this one, this game was pretty sweet.

Cliax Codec is a combination of top-down and third-person shooter. The gameplay will blend platforming, puzzle and shmup elements together to create a unique gameplay experience. You will take control of four playable characters which rise against a team that seemingly wants to take over the world - but are their motives really that cliché, or are there deeper motives behind their actions?
