If you are, SMB: The Next Levels is an excellent choice! SMB: The Next Levels is DJ Coco's first fangame release in nearly four years. As the title suggests, the gameplay most closely resembles the original Super Mario Bros., with similar mechanics and a landscape abundant in mushrooms, Goombas, Koopas, and other familiar Mushroom Kingdom stuff. However, it won't take you long to realize that The Next Levels is quite a step up in difficult when compared to the original SMB - in fact, it's considerably harder than SMB2J/The Lost Levels. Some of the later levels are nearly as tricky as the levels seen in the infamous "Kaizo" ROM hacks. Almost all of the graphics are custom, and they're consistently a treat for the eyes despite being created by a diverse group of spriters. The music also blends together nicely, and the SMW instruments used throughout the game are a unifying force, even in a game that includes Touhou songs! Having a choice of two playable plumbers is a nice touch, and it's nice to see the use of Star Coins that have an actual purpose, instead of just being useless filler as in most Hello clones. Overall, SMB: The Next Levels is a traditional platformer that still manages to feel fresh and innovative, and rumor has it that this isn't the only promising game that DJ Coco has in the works.
