Toadette's Soup Kitchen Demo by GuineaGuinea's recent Minigame Competition entrant is a puzzle-platformer that harkens to the days when Nintendo still made fast-paced puzzle games in the mold of Yoshi's Cookie, Tetris Attack, and Wario's Woods. While this game remains in demo stage, I think you'll enjoy the unique, charming gameplay Guinea delivers. As one of the only games on MFGG to let you play as the disgustingly cute, braids-dangling, pink-clad mushroom retainer, Toadette's Soup Kitchen lets you... make soup. To accomplish that objective, you pluck vegetables - the theme of the competition - out of the ground and heave them into a nice warm cauldron of soup. However, it's not quite as simple as it might appear at first glance. For one thing, you have to toss the vegetables in the stew in the right order, or else risk spoiling the soup if you make too many mistakes. In later levels you have to keep a close eye on the temperature of the pot, or else it might boil over or get too cool, costing you points and risking an entire pot of soup. And that's not to mention the fact that sometimes you'll have to ricochet the veggies off a series of walls in order for them to land in the soup. With those complications, you might find yourself ready for an audition on some late-night Food Network reality show after playing this. The 10-level demo is already a fun play, and I'd love to see Guinea turn this into a full game with more levels, more vegetables, and original graphics.
Also, it's probably worth giving an honorable mention to DistantJ's Super Awesome Bros., an iPhone indie game with some Mario elements, and to the Luigi's Mansion 2D demo, which is one of the most impressive engines we've seen lately. Kudos to all of you.
