Note: This is the first time anyone's typed a Game of the Month Award since The Split. I'm open to feedback regarding future changes regarding the format of these, but this is a game that's so unique I can't let this one go unnoticed.
Super Mario Pix by MaxenceEvery once in a while, you see a game on MFGG that you makes you think, "That was neat." This is one of those games. Super Mario Pix is only one level long, but what was conceived as a simple graphical experiment has grown into a profoundly clever and charming game. The graphical style pays tribute to arcade classics of yesteryear but also delves into the world of 3-D, something that few games - especially Mario fangames - do. The game also makes good use of sound effects and a simple but effective nostalgic remix of the Delfino Plaza theme, which fits the mood of the game perfectly. The game isn't glitch-free, but the gameplay is of a very high quality. Above all, Super Mario Pix is proof that fangames don't have to be long-winded epics to be fresh, original, and most importantly, fun to play.
Also, honorable mention to Ultramario's Newer Mariodoom.
