compare the backgrounds from
super princess peach to SMB3 and you'll be able to tell the difference clear as day- while SPP's backgrounds are still less saturated than the foreground, they still retain a lot of the color and life needed to mesh well with the sprites in the foreground.
SMB3, much like it's gameplay assets, is very muted and in some ways basic. it doesn't really do a lot with it's colors so mixing these backgrounds with the bright and colorful character sprites of SPP doesn't really work.
