I'm making a platformer with some home made engine and - a majority - of custom graphics (mostly made by me).
The problem is that I don't think it looks really good (I'm not a really good spriter :P). So I was wondering, would it be better to keep using this kind of style or to create another one?

You should edit the sprites to match a less clashing style, or sprite new ones entirely.

I think he's talking about the SMB3 background with Super Princess Peach sprites. maybe using SPP sprites or editing the other objects into that style could work.

You should either make the Super Princess Peach Mario and goomba sprites match your tileset's style of shading, coloring, and outlining, or make new Super Princess Peach styled tiles to match the Mario and the goomba. Also limiting your color pallet can help make things look more tied together.

hmm.. I doubt I could create Super Princess Peach styled tilesets, backgrounds and sprites. Maybe I could make a new art style based on Super Mario World's ? It'd be easier to make.

It seems like the most obvious problem is that they appear to use not only different colors, but different kinds of colors. Your colors are very bright and saturated, while the background is much more muted.

It seemed obvious to me that the background had to be less saturated that the foreground

it's just that it's spotty, is all.

compare the backgrounds from super princess peach to SMB3 and you'll be able to tell the difference clear as day- while SPP's backgrounds are still less saturated than the foreground, they still retain a lot of the color and life needed to mesh well with the sprites in the foreground.

SMB3, much like it's gameplay assets, is very muted and in some ways basic. it doesn't really do a lot with it's colors so mixing these backgrounds with the bright and colorful character sprites of SPP doesn't really work.

It doesn't seem that bad looking to me.

But you probably want to lighten the colours for the background elements. It should be very obvious to the player which objects are foreground that they can interact with and which are background. :)
