Yea, this is cool but he is kinda stiff looking here. I think it's mostly his arms that are making him look that way, rather than his legs.

If you're really wanting to go with the retro stance, you could edit his arms to look more like they're in front of him since they're kinda flat right now. The stance would look like how it did in New Super Mario Bros. 2 when you're Racoon Mario.

Or you could just drop his arms down, that works.

I think that works too, fixing the shoulder makes it a lot better. Now I'd only argue that his elbow is a bit unclear, but you can decide that for yourself since it might just be me.

I feel like theres better things for Mario to turn into than just a regular kirby rock, like Thwomp.

You're probably already planning to make him turn into a bunch of random things but imo I don't think regular rock should be one of them.

Why should excluding the rock matter all that much? It's his sheet, so he could use the rock if he wants. If anything, a smarter idea is to redesign the rock to make it look a bit more interesting.

EDIT: A good friend of mine shared his thoughts on your rock. Make of it what you will.
"I really see no problem with the regular rock myself, apart from that it could use some additional shading and lighting on mario's face to look more stone. A brown, or grey color might work better than bright red as well."

I have mixed feelings on the rock. Its design is really weird, with low contrast and a face that makes the texture uncohesive, but maybe a more interesting rock design could be done? I kinda agree with Syx in that a regular rock is fundamentally flawed, since Mario's transformations are usually weird and funny. A Thwomp would work well, I think.

I love Mario's idle animation, though!

It would be kinda neat to mix the rock power up idea with Rock Mario from SMG2. Like, if you use it, he forms into a boulder like in SMG2, and if you use it on a slope, it will start to roll.

i really hope these sprites are released on sheets. these are amazing. for sword mario, the top one, but with more of a grayish color on his clothes.
