It looks really awesome! I actually think I prefer this art direction over the official Paper Mario sprites as it embraces the paper aspect a bit more. :D

Considering how simple it is for me to create puppets and make corrections with this art style, I should be able to get the first short done by late summer as I originally intended.

Anyway, I'm very happy that this thread is getting a lot of feedback because I now have a better sense of what actually works and what doesn't. With that said, here's something else to look over.

Image

I went ahead with creating the hair and laying down the lineart for the torso. I want to make sure that the head doesn't overtake the size of the torso and both pieces fit together nicely. How did I do?

the torso looks a bit on the larger size to me, i would maybe shrink it down just a little bit, or maybe even make it more circular than oval-shaped. other than that, looks good so far.

Done and done!

Not only do I have two new colors to try out, but I also adjusted the base of the hat's outline to be a little more narrow (the altered hat is below the current hat). Your thoughts?

Back to the eyes briefly, first I'd like to say you got the size down pretty much to a tee! It looks far better with them being more reasonably thin, but there's still one thing I'd suggest: making the leftmost eye slightly thinner to give the illusion of depth. I know, technically since it's supposed to emulate paper that shouldn't really be a concern, but it'd still look good.

Also, maybe make the curvature of his chin a little more to the right? Looks like it's popping out too much to one side :P

Other than that, impressive as always!

Excellent! The eyes look much more lively now, definitely maintains Mario as a character rather than a, pardon the pun, cardboard cutout.

Sounds good to me! Anyway, while I wait for additional feedback, I added two of the limbs to Mario.

Image

By the way, can I copy and paste to make the other foot, or would it be a better idea just to make the two sets from scratch?

i think his body and limbs are definitely on the big side. in a way he also doesn't really appear to have a neck

Understood, Mit. I think a minor rescale could fix that.

Image

By the way, even though it's not a good idea to base it too heavily on the original Paper Mario, can I still use some traits from that, such as two knuckles instead of three? Look at the Paper Mairo artwork from Paper Jam, his glove looks crowded with three knuckles.

Yeah, I prefer it with two knuckles. It's coming along really well :D

One thing I noticed is that the body should (maybe) be turned a little more to the side... or maybe not, I'm not sure.
It might also look better if his hand was [i[slightly[/i] bigger (but not his arm).

I really really love the style you've got going! :D

Okay, then how about something like this?

Image

Once I finish Mario's front pose, I'll be able to work on more than one character because I'll have a good sense of scale for the other characters.

By the way, if I ever run into characters that use a lot of black, what do you think is the best idea for handling the outlines? Should I use that same black for the outline and use a lighter fill, keep the current black and use a lighter outline, or just leave it as it is?

I think his back arm should be moved to the left a bit. Right now it looks like he's pushing his chest forward.
