Oof. The SMB1 walk cycle was already awkward enough, and when you try applying that to a more realistically-proportioned sprite it really shows. I guess it can't be helped since it's the style you're going for, though.
There's my best shot at it. You're technically right that the knee should be lifted when Mario moves his leg forward, but if you slide his legs like this I think it looks a little better. I also darkened the leg in the background so you could tell it apart and I ping-ponged the animation SMB3/SMW style. SMB1 didn't have ping-pong animations, but it technically could have because ping-ponging a 3-frame animation into 4 frames doesn't require more space on the ROM.
