These sprites are going to be for a project called If Only Super Mario Bros 4, or whatever I eventually decide to call it upon release.
I could go in-depth about explaining the name, but I'll leave it as just another Mario platformer with an art style between SMB3 and SMW.
(I never really have explained ioSMB4 very well...)

I plan on posting sprites here often, and right now the only thing I really want is what I need to do to change those sprites.
I'll post GIFs of each sprite, drafts if any, and the sprite bay I used to assemble the sprite.
The only thing I want is constructive criticism, and if I explain how a concept works, I'd also like ideas to expand on it or change it if it's potentially annoying or a broken mechanic.

For today, all I have is a Grinder from SMW:

I really like how you show your first drafts. That's pretty cool! It really shows how many ideas someone can go through before getting to a final piece. I love it!

This final version w/ the varying shades of gray looks great.

Thanks; the final version was a new style of shading for me.

I also made a Peepa over the course of the day.
Edit: But have a look at my Eerie edits first. They're edits because the original sprites were near-perfect, excepting the no outline on the eyes and some quick color and shading correction.

Image

Gold is when a light is being shined on it. I didn't really change the animation becuase the Eerie is going to keep moving in the direction it is, plus it looks like it's breathing heavily or about to be woken up, if it was sleeping.

Somehow, I didn't see it's preexisting idle animation, so I had to come up with one for it. Should I make it's actual idle animation?

I like the Peepa, the idle animation is really fluid and such, although I don't see how we'd get the ring of them that they usually appear in when it's a 2d not 3d platformer. Will they be standalone?
If they're going to be moving I think they should have a different animation than the idle.

I think I'll remake it's original idle animation, which is used when the Peepa is using then.

(Something doesn't quite look right to me on it's animation... Is it because the shoe isn't bouncing?)

I know. You didn't get the right depth perception.
(I'm considering you have 4 frames for the animation.) When the wrench is totally open, it shall be totally light, like when it's totally closed. For the semi-open frames, only one half will be darker (the upper half for one frame, the lower half for the other frame). Their order will decide the direction the wrench is spinning.

Also, green's 2nd & 3rd shades need more contrast with each other.

(It's 6 frames.)
It's hard to understand what you meant by opening and closing; it's a key. But I do understand what you mean: the front-on view should have different shades due to the shadow that the middle rod of the key produces.
I also accidentally used the early shoe recolor for that GIF. I agree, it has low contrast.

I also figured out why it looked weird:
I did it wrong.
Spoiler:

The key should be on the side.
I blame the spritesheet that I used as a reference; I normally sprite my stuff with other's sprites somewhere nearby in case I get stuck or something. For example, I used Mit's Peepa sprites as a reference.
(I don't plagiarize, though; like I said, it's only for reference, or if I can't quite get the right shape or something.)

Also: Should I make something like this?
Spoiler:

I've decided that I'm not going to move the key on the shoe inwards, as it looks perfectly fine on the back.
Anyways, I also made Kuribo's Heel.

Image

Except for the Kuribo's Heel, I did go and recolor the shoes to various player colors in order to retain the effect from SM3DW, when you collect an Ice Skate.
(I plan on renaming the Ice Skate to Nakabon's Skate, the japanese name for the Flurry.)

The yellow shoe is supposed to be Wario's, but I added the golden key to the end of it. I guess you could consider it a golden version of Kuribo's Shoe or something.
The purple shoe was also recolored from red in order to make the player color for Mario more unique.
Speaking of which, the purple shoe is something new called Boo's/Teresa's Boot; it's styled after the Poltergeist 5000. Should I add a vacuum hose or a wind-up key to the back of it?
(The Teresa's Boot would allow you to stomp on ghosts and do another thing or two, which I'm not about to go in-depth about.)

Clipboard/Spritesheet:
Spoiler:

The shoe with the spikes on it is supposed to be Poodobo's/Baburu's Shoe.

Drafts:
Spoiler:

I'm not quite finished with everything yet, as I plan on making Lakitu's/Jugman's Shoe, Sumo's/K.K.'s Shoe, and Flurry's/Nakabon's Skate.

I'm quite impressed, I have to admit. It's not too far off in terms of style from what I'd imagine a SMB5 to be. Though, I'd assume you might want to take a little bit of influence from Yoshi's Island as well. I know it's not a Mario game per se, but if I'm not wrong they share similar staff (Heck, it's made by guys calling themselves the Mario team), and Miyamoto himself considers the original a "core Mario game". With its unique art style toned down a little, it could work as good influence for keeping an authentic art direction.

I actually do consider Yoshi's Island a core Mario game, but I prefer the SMB3/SMW art style more. Yoshi's Island is still a great art direction to go in, though- I just don't know how to go about it. Thicker black lines and lines that vary in thickness have never been in my art style, and I like my sprites clean, so I guess that it's just not in my nature right now to implement that art style. (No matter how much I love it.)

Also: Just a little clarification about the name ioSMB4.

Posting sprites between threads is kind of not fun sometimes.
Also games are eating up my free time.
Also I drew some sports balls.
imaginary cake wrote:

I had more palettes for each of the balls, but I left this unfinished because I could not sprite the basketball for the life of me.
Also something can probably be done to fix these balls a little.

Edit: Anyone know of any good basketballs and soccer balls to work with? (Or, if you're not in the US, a football?)

Bringing this topic back from 2 months or something like that since I have more stuff to show.
(Unfortunately for me, spriting is seasonal and is only when I don't have school and have the motivation.)

Anyways, I've been designing villains for my project.

Image

I lost my blender pencils for this one so it looks a bit rough.
Basically, this is supposed to be a crazy magician that was reduced to a hat through his own accidental curse. I don't really have much more back story than that, but more would be welcome.
Oh yeah, and the hat also possesses bodies or people that wear it. Put it on a snowman and it comes to life, put it on Bowser and you've got another story.

Image

No name for this one yet as it really needs a name.
Anyways, it's supposed to be this SMS goop-based mermaid thing that swims through the goop, like in Splatoon. It's meant to have a moody personality.
I actually reached the swimming mechanic on my own and not directly copying Splatoon as I thought back to SMS and how objects and people could be submerged in the goop- so why not be able to swim through it?

Demo of what I mean:

Image

Also have a SMS-related picture I found that many of us can relate to:
Spoiler:

Anyways, here's the last villain I drew:

Image

This one is a bad boy scarecrow from the 50's, meant to be the hat's assistant should the hat be left without a body. The scarecrow would also put the hat on willingly at some points, under the hat's orders. (This is also something I'm still trying to develop.)
