Yeah, the negative space is too much. The scale is indeed a bit hard to tell.

Is this sorta SML styled? (But honestly, the fire flower looks too big for it's roots (how do I come up with them?))

Firstly, cool, I like that you have a custom style you enjoy :biggrin: . Secondly, I was sorta talking to myself 'cause of my bad joke. "Too big for it's roots". It was also some criticism, by the way. The fire flower actually looks too big compared to Mario.

Awesome! But I'm not a huge fan of how they're just mirrored. At least some subtle differences in their poses and the cloth could make it look much more interesting and more realistic.

He looks a little blocky on the side facing carrying poses, but I think that can be fixed by deleting the one pixel between the helmet and that white collar to his shirt, giving him a little more curve for his head. :)

I think Mario being overly fat and have a baseball cap is intentional. It's very exquisite and I like it.
I just can't recognize the other guy as Luigi. Give him a baseball cap too.

I think Mario could use a bit more shading on his outfit, unless you're adding that later. His arms seem to lack a light source, watch out for that. Also yeah, Luigi needs a hat in order to be recognizable. His muscles could also use some work. Take a look at Popeye and see how his muscles were handled. Even though they aren't realistic they should still have sensible structure to them. Also watch out for jagged edges.

Thanks for the constructive criticism, the thing with Luigi is that I wanted him to be a redneck gangster wannabe. So that is why I gave him a bandana instead of a hat.
