if anyone here has experience in unity, maybe their input would be useful to have here so others could get an idea for how it works and what benefits there are to using it

Unity actually uses C#. Unreal Engine uses C++.

From what I hear, Unity is one of the best engines to use. It's professional, so you can use it for nearly anything, but it's also easy enough to work with that a small guy can learn to make a game with it easily.
