So for probably a couple years now I've been entertaining the idea of making a sprite editor of my own. Paint is intuitive (in some ways), but it's limited and its UI has gone downhill since 2001 instead of improving. Others like GIMP, Paint.NET, ASEprite, etc. are all way better as far as features, but nobody really has a favorite.

I want to make something that'll basically be Good Paint With The Features You Want.

Grab palettes from an image, intuitive controls and shortcuts, tiling features, animating features, etc.

Also I plan to develop it in Electron so that it's an app you can download rather than a website you have to visit or an HTML document you have to open in a folder.

What kind of features would you like to see in such an app? Let's discuss it here!

make it do that thing paint does where you can hold shift and press arrow keys to immediately drop a copy and then move the selection

Here's my list(its long I've wanted something like this for YEARS):

Paint-style canvas resizing
Layers
Alpha Support
Basic GIF animation support if possible(if you're adding layers this is easy enough to do - look at GIMP's implementation)
Webp support (with animations like GIF if possible)
Ctrl + scroll zoom
Same UI as 95-Vista paint, just improved
When adding text toggle to make text aliased/anti-aliased
Tiling feature like ASEprite has
Metadata editing for formats that support it
Use the NES palette as default(I would say use 95-Vista paint's but it sucks)
3rd colour like 95-Vista paint - ctrl click to use and select it
colour to alpha(see GIMP)
holding shift while making a selection does a perfect square

and thats it

TIL paint does this

@Yoshin:

- Paint-style canvas resizing is on the list for sure; perhaps with a gridlock option too
- Layers are also on the list
- GIF animation support... I'll definitely look into it
- Webp support also
- Ctrl + Scroll zoom is a strong "probably"
- 95 through Vista UI lmao, I'm sad to say that's pretty likely
- Aliasing / anti-aliasing is something I'll have to look into but it's the world's greatest feature
- All the tiling features the world could ever need (hopefully)
- Metadata editing is a great idea that I'll look into
- NES palette as default is a fantastic idea
- Paint had a 3rd color?? Nice. I'll look into this but also I'll probably consider a more robust and intuitive palette system
- Color to alpha... fascinating. I'll look into it
- Shift during selection is a necessary feature
