Post subject:  I need an advice for Paper Mario-like game art style

Good day, I'm a new face here. And I'm not a native Eng speaker, so please answer using simple words without any slang.

First I'll explain about my project. Currently I'm developing a more mature Paper Mario fangame using Unity. Story concentrates around reborn Mario, Luigi, Bowser and Peach, contains major character and appearance redesign and even dating content, when you have an option to view someone's private cutscene at the end of each chapter.

Quote:
Mario Brothers live in the big city. They are very poor. Mario is mute, but he's forced to work as a plumber because he needs to earn a living. Luigi can't walk and rides a wheelchair, but admires his brother very much. Also, he's an exact opposite of "old" Luigi - he's much braver. Peach is a mad techno freak girl who LOVES to bite other people. Bowser.... Egh, that's a surprise :whoops:
Shortly after story begins, The Mourning One(it's just old-times Rosalina) will arrive to retrieve reborn heroes and Bowser and stuff 'em into the pipe :soveryhappy:

Yup. It's odd. That's okay with me.

Now, to the main question of the topic.
I'm not good with the cartoonish art style, so I thought I can use my own, a bit anime-like one. This is a comparsion between a generic Toad maid and our reborn teenager Mario:

So:

1. Possibly can someone suggest any improvements to the art style?
2. How do you think, which height Koopas may be? To the Mario's shoulder or as high as him?
3. The same question goes about Goombas too. Here I'm clueless.

Any advice would be highly appreciated.

I'd suggest you make it less anime like and make the human characters shorter. But hey, that is just me.

Mario looks like a girl

Mario needs to eat a cheeseburger or two. He's just a stick right now.

I think it's weird how you're drawing Mario wiout any of his signature traits-- Mario without his big nose and mustache just isn't Mario to me.

Yeah it kind of just looks like a couple of characters in some fairly sub-par Mario cosplay.

The gradient shading looks kind of DeviantART-y tbh. You should probably go for a simple two-tone shading that actually indicates where light is reflecting. Also maybe make Mario more on-model by shortening the stature, widening the stance and body, replacing the onesy with overalls, and applying mustache.

I agree with Willsaber's suggested fixes.

Mario is too "human" to be made of paper.

i would say that art style is way too taxing to make a full game out of
first shrink the characters down. the long vertical lines don't do anything for readability or motion so they're super unnecessary in a video game
have you seen any hannah-barberra cartooons? something like yogi bear or whatever. in those shows they have dividers between the torso and all extremities. doing that makes it so you don't need to redraw the head when the body moves, or the arms, etc. that'll be really useful when you're animating the characters

also, this is maybe more of a personal nitpick than a legit criticism, but when you change something simple like eyes or hands, there should be a good reason. why does mario have whites in his eyes, but the toad girl doesn't? they also have drastically different hands, feet and noses. if that's all on purpose OK but it's something to keep in mind

draw the koopas standing on their back legs and make them a bit shorter than mario
the goombas should be extremely short, the smaller the better

and finally:
despite all my criticisms i think that art looks good, especially the Toad girl. it's just not suitable for a game currently
