Not to mention the Castlevania RPGs, some Mega Man games, Terraria, Milon's Secret Castle... I'm not even a mainstream gamer, so I'm sure there must be a ton of 2-D open world sidescroller games that I'm not aware of. Heck, there's a Mario fangame which is a 2-D open world sidescroller: Mariovania.
