Hey everyone! My name is SuperDude64, and today I wanted to tell all of you about a project that I'm working on. I'm remaking SuperMarioLand for the gameboy from the ground up using original assets! I'm currently lacking a background artist and a music maker. I'm also needing some help with playtesting and feedback.

If anyone is interested, then please respond!

Thanks in advance, have a great day!

Cool!

I might be interested in doing some light playtesting. I'm a very busy person though, unfortunately.

Also: I'm in favor of remakes and the like, though some users might not think it's such a good idea considering the amount of takedown notices that Nintendo likes to hand out to projects like this these days.

Moved to Developer Discussion because there's nothing you have to show yet.
Good luck with the project!

Cliax Codec is a combination of top-down and third-person shooter. The gameplay will blend platforming, puzzle and shmup elements together to create a unique gameplay experience. You will take control of four playable characters which rise against a team that seemingly wants to take over the world - but are their motives really that cliché, or are there deeper motives behind their actions?

I will try to playtest for you. You may also want to use a premade engine so it handles Mario's animations, physics, etc. Good luck!

Don't do this.

If you want to make the remake as accurate as possible, you shouldn't use a premade engine. To make major modifications to premade engines like Hello Engine you need to know how the engine works, which takes some time to learn. I'm not even talking about useless features these engines come with.

Also, if you wanna get more team members, you should have at least something to show, otherwise it's pretty hard for you to find someone talented.

Anyways, good luck.

Mors explained why it's generally a bad idea to use a premade engine if you want to do more than engine cloning. Moreover, it's not that difficult to remake any 2D (in the literal sense of the word) Super Mario platformer. Especially not Super Mario Land.

There are a surprisingly large amount of intricacies in Super Mario games, but I'd hesitate greatly to call any of them complex. Super Mario Land in particular lacked a complex camera, sliding, holding, throwing, swimming, climbing, ground-pounding, spin jumping, and iirc it doesn't even let you boost jump off of enemies (EDIT: Pppppppppppretty sure I was wrong about that). If you want to split hairs, it is even more simple than Super Mario Bros. on the NES. There's not really any reason to use a premade Super Mario Land engine when it's already very easy to recreate, because the benefits of understanding your own code are almost always worth the effort of coding something on your own.

I certainly don't. AM2R was a remake of an old Game Boy game and got taken down. I would not be surprised if the same happened here. The fact that it is a remake and not a more original fan game would kill any fair use defense you might have.

Remakes are very often shut down, so I think it would be time better spent making a brand new game, perhaps using Super Mario Land's gameplay. Not to mention this would be more unique anyway.

But good luck on your project, whatever it is you decide to do. :)

Dont ya worry! I'm working on an engine right now, and I really don't want to use a pre-made engine. However, I will change the physics up a little bit to change gameplay.

Wow! I really didn't expect this to get so many supportive comments! Thanks alot everyone! I have noted some of the minor "complaints" (if you can even call it that), and I have read every comment. I have seen people interested in playtesting too, and I will set up a discord server for discussing the project!

If anyone wants to join, then hit me up with a reply!

I also saw that people wanted to see some footage, and I have now collected some screenshots from the game. Thanks to yall!

I'd like to check out the discord server.

The sprites in the screenshots aren't exactly amazing though.

Yeah, the sprites aren't really that good looking, especially that Mario sprite. I dunno how to describe it, but the shape of Mario and some of the sprites just don't look right. There are also some banding and pillowshading. The palette could be improved too.

EDIT: Also, you can just post the link of the server here.

There are many who tried to remake Super Mario Land, only to abandon it.

Not sure why. It seems like, of all the Mario games you could remake, it would be among the simplest. Next only to SMB1, Donkey Kong, or Mario Bros probably.

Seems like a really awesome idea, I wish we had something like sprites or something, but I'm guessing you're just telling people what you're working on. (I'm unsure if you're like this really popular guy, I'm new here :P)
