I will try to playtest for you. You may also want to use a premade engine so it handles Mario's animations, physics, etc. Good luck!
Mors explained why it's generally a bad idea to use a premade engine if you want to do more than engine cloning. Moreover, it's not that difficult to remake any 2D (in the literal sense of the word) Super Mario platformer.
Especially not Super Mario Land.
There are a surprisingly large amount of intricacies in Super Mario games, but I'd hesitate greatly to call any of them complex. Super Mario Land in particular lacked a complex camera, sliding, holding, throwing, swimming, climbing, ground-pounding, spin jumping, and
iirc it doesn't even let you boost jump off of enemies (
EDIT: Pppppppppppretty sure I was wrong about that). If you want to split hairs, it is even more simple than Super Mario Bros. on the NES. There's not really any reason to use a premade Super Mario Land engine when it's already very easy to recreate, because the benefits of understanding your own code are almost always worth the effort of coding something on your own.
