Well, I want to make a fangame this Christmas vacation but I don't know which engine I will do the actual game in. What do you guys think? Try not to suggest engines that needs PRO cause I don't have PRO edition. Hehe! Thanks in advance!

I assume you're using Game Maker 7 or 8 here.

Hello Engine 3/4 has a lot of features, but it also has some very annoying little glitches, and unless you add some new graphics, enemies, and power-ups, some people will complain it's overused.

The DeeY Engine is similar to Hello's. It has fewer enemies and features, but Mario's mechanics feel a lot more natural.

Djrelik's Engine has the best mechanics of any engine, but it has only a few enemies, and you won't make much headway unless you're fluent in using parents and scripts.

The Ultramario Engine is disorganized and a little out of date, but you still might want to give it a try.

If you want to start with something more stripped-down, Oni-Link's engine is one of the best Mario-only engines I've seen.

Check the Engines topic here, too, along with the How-To's on the main site.

Is there a best SMW engine? If there's not one that's close to SMW, then I'll make my own with all the stuff in it (not ALL the stuff until I get to engine 3) :D . I'll even try to get the glitches in the game without making them. I like the glitches in SMW.
If your telling me that I should use Lunar Magic, I won't because I would have to use ROMs and there illegal until 75 years.

I think Hello's going to fix them in the next engine.
Hello can't make jumpthrough slopes because the coding had less effort. Just look at that slope code! You see the D&D he put there? Why not he be lazy and put place_meeting. He put in scr_mariostep:
Code:
while collision_rectangle(bbox_left,bbox_top,bbox_right,bbox_bottom,obj_slopeparent,1,1)
y-=1

He rushed!
Another one, Mario just gets up the slope quickly. Mario can run up slopes. Mario jumps backwards, but I can fix that. But what if I'm play SMBRR? I can't! I'll record Hello Engine flaws and put it on YouTube.

The Mario mechanics doesn't feel more natural. Big Mario can't hit qblocks and he feels to heavy in air.

The WORST mechanics in hitting a block above (engine 8), but the rest feels SMB3. He can't make jumpthrough slopes because they're the solid object's child.

Hmmm, I might use Djrellik's Engine. I want to make a game about an admin rescuing other MFGGers but I don't know... Any other suggestions?

Plus however long Nintendo lasts. So it'll be a long time yet.

Also, to the main topic at hand, you could always try to make your own engine. It offers the most flexibility of all since, well, whatever you want to put in you can just put in.

Falcon Punch is the result of the Sun heating fists. It drives the Blue Falcon. Heating causes destruction of water into the pain, where it then hurts, creating rain. Rain creates flowing water in tears, which can then be converted into other forms through more pain.

Well, making my own engine seems like a good idea. But there is one problem! I don't know the basics of programming :(.
If someone could help me I'd be happy :D !

Search GML tutorials on YouTube. You'll get tutorials that you can see with your eyes. Don't forget to add smooth horizontal movement!!!

The best engine is one you make yourself.

This is a fact.

Listen to this man

Also if you really can't do that, use the Chargine engine or something that is bare bones

Yea, usually it's best to come up with your own engine, and let the other engines go to stay for those who have no programming knowledge.

Sometimes I wonder that there should be more MMF2 Mario engines around. Most of the Mario engines seem to run under Game Maker, which I never liked due to the horrible FPS rate. Though I think there is like 1 or 2 minor Mario engines in MMF2, but it's no Hello style engine.

But even if you don't have programming knowledge, creating your own engine is one of the first steps to learning how to make your own game. :)

The problem with GMs framerate is normally that no one notices they can change it from 30 to 60

Chargine Engine is a platform engine made my Char

It has only the bare bones basics of platforming
Friction, slopes, (basic)enemies, ect.
Because it's so basic you can customize it into about anything platforming, and not have a generic Hello engine clone

The link was on old mfgg and I can't find it but you can always ask char for it
